on the note of Keychains, am I correct in thinking that you can only add links on or of at the master link and if so what are you supposed to do if you crack a link

There are different reasons for those wheel sizes though, not to just "make another standard".

24s are now for the kids who don't quite fit a 26. The 24 in MTBs give a great intro into handbrakes and shifting. BMX they are cruisers and for those who don't feel right on a 20.

26 were the standard for so long, and they are starting to fade out a tad, but they are a very nimble MTB setup, and a great gateway into MTB.

29ers were created as a means to go faster and roll over bumps better. It has provided a MUCH SMOOTHER ride than a 26 can, and also goes a lot faster. You sacrifice a little bit of handling because they are longer though.

27.5 aka 650B came out YEARS AGO mostly in road, but some MTB as well (we're talking upwards of 20 plus years ago) as a faster and smoother option than 26. It has recently come back realizing some applications are not good for 29ers, like DOWNHILL MTB. The wheels fold on downhill sooo much faster. This is a solid compromise to get a faster and smoother ride, but still give you a decently nimble setup for good handling.

Fork steer tubes were expanded because they are STRONGER than a 1inch setup. The bottom of the headset and headtube takes more stress than the top, hence the gussets etc.

The 22 inch size is there for taller dudes or dudes who aren't comfy on a 20, or a dirt jumper. It's also to bridge the gap between a 20 and a 24. It is not just to "sell more shit" it is to FILL A GAP.

BMX seatposts haven't budged in years. In MTB they change based on frame sizing and ways to keep frames stronger. You wouldn't want a 25.4 seatpost in a 22 inch MTB frame, it would look very out of proportion.

And almost everything you are complaining about has been around a while and stayed well. Do you hate fat tire bikes too?

Odyssey sells a kit that has a master link and half link. You use this to repair or lengthen the chain. A little inconvenient time and money wise, but it's a lot easier to work on, and you're getting a much stronger chain.

Yes. I hate fat tire bikes!

Anything bigger than a 2.70!

I have more things to hate!!!

Constantly changing Rear Hub widths!!! 135x10, 135x12, 142x10, 142x12... DH bikes seem to stay at 150x12 which i don't mind.

It's like this, riding the same setup for so long because you are poor as fuck, suddenly your shifter explodes.
You to the bike shop, try to buy a new shifter, they tell you they don't sell 9 speed anymore.

So you buy the shifter, the cogs and maybe they made a new interface for cogs and hub because they changed that as well.

You break a part, you expect to spend 10 bucks, end up spending 100 because of the constantly changing "standard".

lol 9 speeds are going no where soon.... bad example but i get what your saying. it does suck and it doesn't in most cases its an upgrade not a downgrade.

Thing is hate, combo shifter/brake levers. FUCK THAT NOISE.

I too understand, BUT ONE TRY KID, if you are riding a setup THAT LONG, it's very outdated. Honestly they still make 5 speed shifters, 5 speed, 7 speed, 8, 9, 10 and 11.

They aren't gone, just not mass-produced or mass-marketed, or stocked on current model bikes. The technology is old, and rather than continue to update a few things, we have created SO MUCH MORE.

As to the hub sizing, they are finding ways to make things stiffer and stronger to handle increased abuse. Without these innovations, you would not have the technology or lighter stronger parts, and we would all still be riding wooden or steel bikes from 100+ years ago. BMX would not exist, and if it did, it would be stingrays on dirt rollers.

As to fatbikes, have you ridden one in snow or mud? WAY better than a standard MTB, and SO MUCH FUN.

Just like 26ers with 8 inches of travel, there is a specific place they are good. You wouldn't take a road bike downhilling, just like riding a downhill bike down the street for 40 miles is awful. It's all about using the best tool for the job. Some tools are modified to make things easier.

Innovation drives improvement, and advancement of technology. Without it we would all be banging rocks on random animals and eating them raw.

Without companies doing these new ideas we wouldn't have chromoly, we wouldn't have sealed bearings, we wouldn't have freecoasters, gyros, plastic pegs, double wall rims, butted tubing, tig welded frames, so many tread styles, pivotal seats, the list goes on. Hell, your bike would weigh around 40-50 lbs without it. Technology thrives on innovation.
