Issue with Cult Freecoaster

Recently picked up the cult coaster to replace my colony one and i'm having problems with it. It doesn't seem to spin very smoothly and spin as much as it should. Also when the bike is moving (both back and forth) the cranks spin with the back wheel. It's like the cones are too tight but they're not, they've been loosened and tightened just barely. Any one have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Sounds like its not disengaging. Does it do it when youre on the bike? If not I probably wouldn't worry about it. I know a few of my cassettes were like that before they broke in. An over tightened chain can cause this too.

If it does it with you on the bike, its not disengaging properly, id probably send it back to cult if this is the case.

Im kinda surprised at how many people have had problems with this "holy grail of freecoasters"

have you been cleaning it and stuff? and it could be the grooves on the clutch sticking a bit from it being new.

@hardbmx_tim - well just so you know mines running smooth wink

@ O.P... As Eddi mentioned, in the first few weeks of owning a KHE Styled Freecoaster, It is INCREDIBLY Important to take it apart clean it out & Re-Grease it a few times before everything beds in & begins to run smoothly...

@ Tim & Eddi - My EZRA is running PERFECTLY!!! SUPER, SUPER Smooth & Engages & Disengages as smooth as hot butter running down silk! I'm really, REALLY Impressed so far! I would recommend it over any KHE Clutched Freecoaster on the market atm! The Wethepeople Helix (Yeeeeees, I Know I'm Biased!) might not exactly look super pretty! Looking like a Whiskey Keg is either a Big Plus for some who like the different look or a Big Minus for people who think it looks too big & bulky! However the bigger Shell has a reason! NEEDLE BEARINGS!!! That Hub is gunna be UN-BELIEVABLY Smooth!!!

how long have you had your ezra for? i got mine when it first came out and has been pretty crappy the past few months. broken bearings and a snapped slack disc. i replaced everything and it still engages basically every time after being in a fakie for literally a second. Ive emailed and tried calling vein more times than i can count, but of course they never responded.

but i didnt know people were having issues with the cult. its a shame, i was thinking about getting one next.

I've been on Mine since October & I've literally ridden it for Flatland ONLY about 25 times, I've had the Engagement "Pop" twice. I am not going to Grind on this! It is being replaced with a Wethepeople Helix & will be put back on My Flatland Specific Bike! It's honestly the BEST Freecoaster I have EVER Ridden, The Engagement/Disengagement is FAR Superior to ANY KHE Freecoaster Hub I have ridden & at the end of the day, EVEN with all the Bearing & Axle Upgrades the Cult STILL uses a KHE Clutch!!!... The Helix does too! Wethepeople haven't sourced any of the Parts for it! They have ALL been made by Wethepeople, O.K Using the KHE patented Clutch, But NOTHING is just purchased & slapped in etc, etc, etc.... I'm going to be a little weary to start with, BUT... I will give it a good go! & When It's purchased next year when it drops, I will keep everyone up to date with how it's holding up!

The KHE clutch is the same as the Poverty Clutch with the Spring balls. Poverty coaster had looseball bearings from what I recall BUT it came out back in like 02-04, before KHE was known of around the states.

The hub runs smoothly with the cones loose (where the wheel has slight play in it) but once tightened even slightly the hub seems sluggish and pulls the cranks along with it. I upgraded to the cult freecoaster because my colony one had play in the hub/axle, but i'd much rather that than a slow, non-smooth hub.

Been meaning to take it apart and put it back together but I have no idea how to. I've tried to and it would't come apart using the same method that the colony uses. Does anyone know a link or know how to take this thing apart? Pretty iffy about taking a coaster apart if I have no clue what i'm doing.

|

1/5/2014 7:10 AM

Try a thinner grease in it?

If it is too thick, it will make the hub sluggish.

dude, shutup.
@ op. take the lock nuts and cone nut off, then if you turn the driver so its disengages you should be able to pull it of (might need a bit of jiggling fist time) then with a rubber mallet (or hammer, just dont tell anyone) hit the axle from the drive side so it comes out the non drive side. I'd recomend having kitchen roll or something out to lay the pieces in an order that youll remember. dont forget to clean and regrease

Sometimes this can be fixed easily by putting a washer between your hub/frame to take up space. It sounds like when you tighten the bolts, the bearings are compressed so put in a washer to stop the compression. I had this problem on my gsport hub, but once i put a thin washer in to take out any wiggle room my bearings spun great

Also try tightening your crank spindle bolt. that might help the ghost pedaling

Tried taking the cones and driver off, but the axle doesnt seem to want to come out at all...

Also, I run two drive side guards so they take up room so the washer isn't needed.

Will tighten the cranks but i'm not so much worried about the ghost pedals as I am about the grinding feeling coming from the hub. Definitely doesn't feel as smooth as it should.

Gonna get it looked at by my LBS, but how are cult on their warranty if I did just get a dodgy one?

^^ on mine i had the feeling it stuck in the hub. But i was just afraid to break it, you really need to hit it hard, otherwise it won't come out.

Well, I greased it up and the ghost pedalling stopped, and runs a little bit smoother than it did.

Though in the process I accidentally knocked off the bearing shield on the drive side bearing, and it won't stay on... Oh well haha

of course, they are TOTALLY copycats, thats why they took a popular concept and beefed it up in a way that hadnt been done before
yeah they dont have the best "revolutionary" parts, but on this they did something better than the other companies who simply beat the same dead khe horse
they cloned it, changed around some of its DNA, then killed it and are beating it

Yo im have some trouble with my new hub too... i got it put the wheel on everything was great rode it for a few days it popped alittle and the clutch got niceband smoothe so that stopped but then after a sesh at the park i noticed the hub had become loose sort of so i took it apart clean and regreased it put it back together and it was fine was riding street jus a day or so ago and the hub was makinging this terrible grinding/cruching feeling so i checked it when i got home and the whole hub wasloose again so i once again took it apart checked everything out and it now the bearings inside the driver are super rough and have a sort of lump when you spin it and now i cant tighten my driveside locknut more than jus finger tight the driver wont move at all so im wondering if those driver bearings are blown but ive only had the hub less than a month

So im assuming my driver bearings blew out cuz now no matter how tight the locknut is its so hard to spin the driver and the bearing is super rough feeling...dont get me wrong i loved it when i got it 30 days ago lol but after one day at the park the wheel had a wobble and i noticed the hub was loose or had some play in it so after i clean and regreased it and put back on it was perfect again but i rode at the park jus the other day then rode some street it started making a crazy loud screeching/grinding/crunching noise when ever i pedal forward or backward so idk wtf is goin on with it
