Not allowed to ride over something stupid

On sunday i was having a great time riding with friends and we found a parked old van next to a loading dock. We filmed a clip of me jumping from the dock onto the hood and then dropping to the ground. Awesome right!? The next day i sent a frame of the clip to a "friend" i have known my entire life. He decided to be a jerk and send it to my mom to get me in trouble. My parents flipped out saying "i have no respect for peoples property" and "we shouldn't have given you so much freedom" now i'm not allowed to ride for ten days. I didn't even do any damage to the van. I thought my parents understood what street riding was. Anyway, i'm trying to keep myself from going insane but the lack of riding is already getting to me. What's even worse is that my parents say i'm not allowed to use the clip for the vital edit or my personal edit. They think if it gets on the internet the police will see it and come arrest me. Also i'm not sure what to do about the guy that got me in trouble. I would just stop talking to him but it wouldn't work, our parents are friends and i always end up being around him. What can i do the keep from going through bmx withdraw? How can i explain to my parents that the cops don't watch bmx videos to find people to arrest/ticket? What should i do about my friend that got me in trouble?

Hate to be this guy but I'm kinda with your parents honestly, if you ride on cars youre gonna have a bad time. I understand that it was probably just for fun at the time though and I probably would've done it myself if I was there. But yeah that no ridning thing does blow mane

I do understand riding on cars isn't a good thing, but it was an old utility van that a school owns, not someones personal car or anything. And i just did it for the clip, i wouldn't do it all the time like a normal spot.

yeah man... people work really hard to get a car even if its a crappy one, i've been saving for the better part of 4 years to buy my first car, and if i really was desperate, i could get something worse then what i really need right now, but its allot of money, Body work and paint is almost as expensive. once you start driving and buy your own car you'll understand this...

think of it like this....
1 car = 8 top of the line brand new 2015 Sunday Completes
body work for minor damage= 500bucks- a brand new sunday 2015 complete.
paint= brand new sunday 2015 complete.

just to put it into perceptive. for you, What if the car had been damaged, you missed and hit the windshield? could have been hurt very badly. and his car, the vehicle he/she uses day to day to go back and forth to work to provide food and housing for his family is now damaged or not legal or safe to drive on the road. how will his family be affected by this? because some kid decided to ride a bike ontop of his car and missed.

hell i've done my fair share of roof walking, the body does bend in some but normally springs out, but when you add the weight of bike plus force of impact from a landing, vs strength of metal, it could mean serious body work.

and i really hate to be this guy, but listen this was at a loading and unloading dock? Can you say security camera? now, what happens, if you DO post your video online, like on youtube, guarantee he'd be able to find it and the guy sounds local. all he'd have to do is show your video to the police and the security camera footage too, then the police contact google for your information and BOOM you sir have got yourself a nice legal matter on your hands.

how do you know? the van belongs to somebody. even if it was the company who also owns the loading dock. in which case, i can promise you they had a security camera fixed on that spot to keep an eye on whats happening

I think its been said enough... But are you retarded? Your mad because you rode one someone van and your parents won't let you ride because you have no respect? Lets also point out that for your own safety you shouldn't do that. If i saw some kid hop onto my car (or my work van) I would literally fucking flip and it wouldn't end well for you.

Don't be a douchebag. Be glad your bro is looking out for you, your safety, and also trying to keep you on good standings with everyone around you. Getting kicked out of spots sucks. My biggest thing whenever i ride is that nobody vandalizes or messes with anything.

Your comment of "I thought they understood what street riding was" tells me you think it is all about doing whatever you want, even if it involves someones property and the chance at damaging it. What if you fell and broke the windshield? Would you have stayed? You probably would've hauled ass outta there, like the little disrespectful kid I can tell you are.

I'm with your parents. It is clear there is no respect for other people's or companies or schools property. SOMEONE owns it, even if it is a company car. IF there was damage, THAT COMPANY WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. Just because there is no damage does NOT make it ok to do that. You need to respect the spot, regardless of where it is. Pick your trash up, hell pick up any trash you find, don't intentionally destroy plants around it, and do NOT destory ledges.rails etc. The goal is to leave the spot as though you were NEVER there.

As to your friend, it is what it is. he figured fessing up to being a part of this would be a better option that hiding it when shit hits the fan. If you want to be butthurt, fine, do so. If you want to realize what you did was irresponsible and stupid, go for it. Ultimately shit like that is why people disrespect BMXers.

I'm with you on that last bit dave....

I'm NOT AIMING THIS AT ALL THE STREET RIDERS
but look at it like this, when bmx started it was all Racing, very respectful, we had loads of tracks, competitions, and huge national followings and where on the news and papers allot. when vert and freestyle and park became popular, the sport started to grow allot. and the skill progressed thanks to good riders like Hoffman.

and somehow skateparks started closing and we took to the streets, and we've never been in as good standing since. I'm not against street riders, at all. but if you are going to ride street, do it right. get permission, make sure its cool. make sure its written. and be respectful of everything around you. be the sterotypical surfer that is in tune with everything and everybody who loves it all because of harmony that lives on the beach and makes money buy teaching kids to surf and lives off boardwalk fries and water. not the punk kid on the bike/skateboard with stickers in his pocket, and a paintcan in his bag taggin good "spots" so his bros can ride em.

I'd hate to be that guy, but you can get in a lot of shit for that if they do find out. It's unlikely that person or the cops would find the video easily unless someone shows them, but you really shouldn't put that clip online. Granted, I am guilty of doing so too. At least 2 edits I've put out have featured someone (not me) jumping on a car hood, and another jumping on a semi truck hood off a loading dock as well (no cameras here though, we checked) and this was years ago and they never got in trouble.

But if someone sees dents on the hood, and there are cameras, they WILL check the camera footage. Happened to me, although might not have if this douche bag kid didn't tell a security guard after I left. They checked the security footage, saw it, and eventually a cop showed up at my house and long story short, I managed to get off easy & all I had to do was pay a lawyer (whom I'm thankful for getting charges reduced), the damages & restitution which totaled about 3 grand but could have been much worse.

Something to think about, I've done a few car hood rides & even wallrides on them but after that, fuck all that.

Every single major bmx edit out their, from Odyssey, Fit, Sunday, DK kink, whatever, I can promise you, they got written permission to film their. even if their was a pissed off guy in the video I can promise you they contacted the owners of the property frist, and asked for written permission to film or shoot a bicycle stunt shot at that location.
this is just for legal purposes
- to exclude the property owner from any injuries that might have occurred
- to give the film company permission to use the location in footage to be sold to anonymous consumers.
- to grant all liability of damage to property to the company sponsoring the film.

so- lets say Tom Dugan is riding a parking lot, plywood, to wallride to 180 to vantop to fakie bunnyhop off the van.
He pulls off the wallride, but doesn't have enough to make it to the top of the van, he lands on the roof, his bike goes through the windshield of the van. Dugan has a broken ankle, and lots of scrapes and glass in his legs (cuz we all know he rides in basically nothing)
What happens is now- Odyssey, or FIT whoever was sponsoring the video, now has to pay to replace the glass, and any body work to the car, they also have to pay to have the broken glass cleaned up from the ground. aswell as possibly pay for mr. Dugan's medical records.
all of this will most likely be about 10k all together to clean up...
and that is why that Odyssey seat they showed at that thing 5 months ago, now wont be released for another year because they had to pay for a fuckup. And I'm sure Mr. Dugan will be feeling like shit because just like any JOB his BOSS WILL BE YELLING AT HIM FOR IT once he heals up im sure.

you break it you buy it!

Let's be real for a minute ok? Do you really think that every single team gets written permission for every single street clip they get? Depending on the rider and company, that's anywhere from 50 to 100% of the video. And you think they wait around for someone in charge to be able to sign a release for them? A lot of times they're on a trip and don't have a week to wait around. What you said is probably not true...

I was not aware of that. I know it would be INCREDIBLY hard to get permission for every single spot though.

I know a handful of pros who film and they just go ride and film wherever they want for their sponsors, if they see a spot while heading somewhere, they stop and check it out, ride and film it.

Regardless though, people need to respect spots.

Fuck that fake friend bro ! I strongly dislike people like that
for your parents, find a video with someone who rides on a van or a car and show it to your parents. I've seen such videos on TCU, but can't remember the name or the rider right now... But I've seen
Although they probably won't change their opinion after watching the video, they'll know you're not the only one and that there is no problem if you upload it to the internet
I understand you because My parents are waay too strict sometimes too... After my last injury (a bigass wound on my arm and one on my knee) they said that they won't allow me to ride anymore because bmx was too dangerous and it's not worth it... After a month they let me ride again though, but it was shit to hear that they won't let me ride anymore
good luck

But you'll as cool as this guy right here.

This contest series should come back. However Jim Reinstra is doing Pedaling for Pennies and is on a road bike in Central or South America, and I don't think it is on his radar.

Vital should do something like it, where you create a video part and send it in, they judge them, winners get prizes and a lot go into a DVD or web video.

you should give your rat friend a good old whiplash to the cranium

first of all, a bike company is not a goddamn insurance company for their sponsored riders
second of all, if you rode on my car, whether or not you damaged it, i would definitely call the police and hold on to your bike so you wouldnt leave until the cops came
do not fuck with property that is needed and used by someone that can't be used with damage
a curb or rail can be used even if it has wax and a bit of damage, but a car? fuck no
if i was your dad i would find the owner and make you go apologize to them and clean their car even if you didnt damage it
you need to have respect for things that people work had for
