Hello all,

I am looking for a new bike for my son, as he appears to have a growing interest. He has a friend in town with a pretty nice little dirt track with some small jumps. I have learned a lot recently in what to look for (almost bought a redline MX Expert), then realized we don't want an aluminum race bike (not yet anyway).

I looked at Redline and GT, as they are the ones I remember as a kid, and i don't see an Cooks Bros, Kuwahara's or National Pro's these days (bikes I owned).

I have recently heard some good things about WTP, and was curious if this would be a good bike to start (he has had a few cheap walmart bikes).

How tall is he?

I'm gonna need bigger bars

How tall is he? That could determine what size bike he needs.

What is he riding? Vert, trails, or street?

He is about 4-9. He will be riding some street and local dirt track that a kid in town has in his yard. It is a decent track with some small jumps. I don't think I want to go over 20.25TT.

Hyper dirt kings are great starter bikes if they still make them

That chart seems a bit conservative. I am 5-8 and had a blast ridin my buddy's 24" GT the other day. His walmart bike a 20. TT length. I am not buying a 18.5-19, he is surely going to hit some growth spurts soon.

Get him an 18" bike

He is on his 2nd 20" bike now. I appreciate the opinion, but see no reason to go back to an 18" bike.

Do you think the 20" bike I linked is a good, solid bike for what he wants to do?

|

the bike is really good , if hes young and still has room to grow , this bike will be a good size , im not sure how well this will fit dirt , but for just riding around and practicing bunny hops and stuff this bike will never give you any problems

Don't go over 20.25 if you're going to get him a bike. If you want to get him a nice bike check out the new Premium completes.

Yeah its good, but you'd have to clean it after he rides it on the dirt because of the unsealed hubs.

I guess that may be what i have to do. When I go to a bit higher end bike to get all the goodies, plus sealed hubs, I can't find anyhting with a 20"TT, they get bigger, like 20.5 and 20.75 and 21 with all the extras.

This is more research than I thought.

The only Premiu, bike i saw that he would fit is the Solo.

Great parts, great brand, and the bike looks great. Comes in 20" TT with 8" rise bars which would fit him perfectly seeing as he's not even 5 feet yet.

Im 15 years old, I suck at BMX, I live in Texas.

That's all.

Now a new dilemma. He has a 2013 WTP Trust in shop (Black/Orange), $700+msrp, that I can get for sub $500. It is a 20.5TT, but I am going to take the kid up for a test ride this week.

This bike appears to have some ncie parts.

That WTP Would be a very good starter bike. Sealed all around and it already comes with some high end éclat parts. Def would be a good bike that will last him and eventually he can always get more aftermarket parts and customize it some more. I also must say, the 48 spline 3 piece crank is very nice to have. It eliminates needs for cinch bolts which can always do numbers on the ankles once he starts trying tricks. All in all very good bike for your son to start out on. smile

I appreciate all the feedback from you guys, good stuff. We are going to the shop Friday to see if this fits him (WTP Trust 2013), if not we will place the order for the 2014 WTP Curse in Black. The Trust is 20.5TT and the Curse is 20.0TT.

I hope the Trust fits him, those parts appear to be a pretty big step up from the Curse for only about $70-$80 bucks.

I just listed ny bad ass sportster on CL ( I can get another HD when he is grown and can support himself, too high of a risk right now). I may be in the market for one to ride along with him, and that 2014 WTP Envy looks SICK!!!.

You guys are great, thanks again.

So, we went up today and he took it for a ride, and of course fell in love with it. I paid 2/3 down, going back with the truck and the kiddo to pick it up tomorrow. It fits him fine, and no way I could pass up that much bike for the price. It really is an incredible looking bike, much more so in person. My kid is having a hard time getting to bed...

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated. I don't think I will have to replace this one in a year.

Dude i'm 5.4 and run a 20.8 which I've been told is huge for my size but it's comfortable. If he feels comfy on it, get him it who cares if he's tiny but wants to ride a 21".
