In the 80s, I was a BMX racer. About 2 years ago I decided to get back into BMX and started rebuilding my 80s race bike. It was way too small for me, so I bought a 24" bike which I've been riding on and off since. I never looked into a "new" 20", thinking they'd all be too small for me.
The other day I came into a 2002 Haro Backtrail X1 - pretty much fully stock but with a few mechanical issues. I dug the colors and lines of the bike, so I decided to keep it as my daily rider. I tore it down, cleaned it up, rebuilt it, took off the gyro (I decided to give the whole brakeless thing a try on this bike), replaced the stem, and - on a lark - pulled my 24 umph XL bars off of my 24" and put them on the Backtrail.
WOW.
Riding this bike is not only rad, but it's way more fun than my 24". With the bigger bars on it, it's super easy for me to huck around (even given that the Backtrail X1 is a tank) and manual, and while there's been some awkwardness getting used to a 20" again, it's becoming more and more comfortable.
I'm going to ride the piss out of this bike, then I'm going to start looking into a new 20". Effing rad.
I don't ride a BMX bike to look cool to others, I do it because it's fun and never do I think "Boy I sure am cool on my BMX bike."
