Clean with a degreaser like wd40 or the like, once clean give it a good lubing with a quality chain oil...don't just use wd40 as a lube just use as a cleaner only

Use a chainbreaker it's a lot easier and you won't damage your chain

you could use an SOS soap pad and scrub the hell out of it.
btw, dont use wd40 on your chain after its clean. It will make it grimey again. use chain oil.

Just order one anyways, it's a good tool to have in your kit, in all honesty its worth it!

Speaking from experience if you you try and remove a chain without the correct tool, you may end up having to buy a new chain cause it gets damaged from knocking the shit out of it!

If you can remove the rear wheel and then clean your chain that will do, if time is a factor and you don't have a chain breaker

I'm sure people have strong feelings the other way, but I have cleaned ugly-looking, lost-cause chains without even breaking/removing them from bike.

I'd just take off sprocket/rear wheel and hang down into tray of whatever you have that will degrease it (I use Park's Chain Brite citrus degreaser stuff - it's awesome- but prob something similar at grocery or hardware store if you find out what's in it). Maybe even mildly dish-soapy water? Clean it with an old toothbrush or something like that, rinse, dry and re-lube and you're good.

il just leave it on the bike and do what you said. smile
for the chain lube could i just use normal grease? the kind that comes in a container that you just scoop out?

Don't know that you want a really thick grease so if thats what you have just a real little... i've used the White Lightning stuff which is great (weird when you 1st use it cause you spray the liquid on, and it seems like it dries but it's really like a thin oil and protective wax). Also some thinner lithium grease might be ok. Don't over do it

I use toyota grade, green, thick grease for the bearings or other stuff.

For the chain, I use good ole lube.

You don't want to remove a chain without a chain tool. Ever. And get a BMX grade one, my MTB one broke with my Shadow interlock (seriously, got the chain on tho).

Here's what you want to do.

Grab a long piece of tissue and wrap that around the chain. It needs to be thick. Insert the long extension tube of the WD40 can into a small slot, directing downwards into the chain. This is so that you dont spray WD40 everywhere. What you could also use is the cylindrical cardboard inner of tissue rolls.

Spin the chain slowly and spray.

When you have done a tour, your rag/tissue will be a bit wet. Stop.

Go look at an edit or a adam lz/boqer123/BethanyBMX webisode (Landing Tricks or Fry Trying is not bad).

When you come back, the chain must have gotten a bit dryer. Repeat the whole process again.

This time, don't stop for a webisode. Put some music on. Get a wire brush and brush the grit out of the chain (this step is only for those who have never cleaned their chain properly- i said cleaned-not lubed). Grab another tissue/towel/rag and wipe, wipe, wipe, wipe, wipe, wipe until there are no more grease stains on the cloth. You can take a good hour for this. Don't forget to bend the chain a bit when you are wiping.

WHen you are done, you can call it a day. The residue WD40 will ''lube'' your chain for 5 seconds, so you can go out and pop a bunny hop 720 double tailwhip. Don't forget to eat a rabbit when you are at it.

Come back, redo the WD40 part. After your one hour long wipe, there is still going to be some small dirt particles. This time, the wipe time will be much shorter. Before you go to bed, soak the chain with WD40 again. Don't wipe this time, let it drip. Put a cloth under to not ruin your floor.

When you have finished, go to dinner. Put your bike/chain in a well ventilated place.

Before going to sleep (like, when you are yawning and in your PJs), go to the bike, and drop two drops of lube in each link: the outside and the inside. Don't let the drop fall in the middle, let in drop on the side, where there is a slot between each plate.

Go to sleep again, wake up at 10 in the morning.

Get a last, final rag and wipe the residue lube out of the chain. This time, don't bend the chain when yo are wiping. What you want is to remove the outside lube (the one that won't do any good and that attracts more dirt). Spin the chain around. Wipe. Spin. Wipe. Spin. Wipe.

There you go! You have just really re lubed your chain and can call yourself a professional chain luber. Be careful on the lube you use. Use dry-weather specific lube.

For those who will inevitably comment negatively on my post, saying that all the steps are nonsense and you should just lube and go ride it, I answer:

Before BMXing, I was (and still am) a Mountain biker. I have raced in the most gruesome mud bogging races in the zone with mud going knee deep. As this a tropical zone, we have the worst rain and mud on the planet. My bike has been sprayed with mud. I have replaced my chain several time, the mud wearing the shit out of it so fast. On some other bikes, theirs even snapped. Mountain bike chains live a hard life, they have to be lubed after EVERY SINGLE RIDE. They don't have to cope with the same amount of torque as our BMX chains do, but they live in the open, always exposed to the elements and not to smooth concrete. I know how to take care of my chain and have more experience in doing so compared to normal "BMX for life" 12 year olds.

What I have just said on top is not the way to LUBE a chain. It is the way to properly CLEAN a chain. Altho I don't like the WD40 part (I use water and soap, with some Muc-Off Bike Chain Cleaner), I add in the WD40 cauz you guys just freakin love it and it doesn't seem to bad... Muc-Off is not bad as a lube company. They have some good stuff and it is all biodegradable.
