So I got an S&M BTM frame the other day and it was trans brown but chipped and scratched all over, so I roughened up the frame with some steel wool and sand paper, leaving the original paint still intact. I put exactly 3-4 coats of black Rustoleum paint on, waiting at least A few hours to a full day in between coats. Then I finally put on some satin clear coat Rustoleum and then the texture suddenly changes, and not exactly in a good way either. It changed into sorta a hammered, leathery look. Looks similar to when you're paint stripped, except just not as bad. And on top of that, the shapes are weird and even, hexagonal-like. This has never happened to me, but I've never used Rustoleum satin clear if that has anything to do with my problem. I need some painting expert to let me know because it's half coolish and half shitty. Thanks.

Oh, and the weather is 80 and under. I live in Nor Cal, and I know it's not great to paint in cool weather, even though I've done all that and still have never ever experienced anything like this in all of my painting life.

I don't think you cleaned the frame off well enough prior to painting

thats what is known as orange peeling, its quite common when painting cars i kind of did it my first paintjob on a car but that is really really bad generally you just buff it out but you put it on very heavy in certain spots so it will be difficult best advice is strip all down to bare metal and do very very light coats in a clean atmosphere.

Nah, I make sure it's clean and dry in between coats.

I know what orange peel effect is, but this has never happened. Maybe I painted this frame so thick, which is why it happened. When I did the top side of the frame, it was mostly fine. And I tend to find that satin/matte clearcoat leaves some kind of white dusty residue that I have no idea about. Whenever that's left, I know for sure that the clearcoat is not going to be smooth..

It has to do with how you paint it in my experience. Usually any type of weird temperature variations will cause it, even moisture in the air, and a lot of the time it has to do with too thick of coats. Just paint further away. Maybe instead of six inches away, do like 10 inches away. It's not too hard to fix.

I repainted my frame too, i got some of the same peeling but only in maybe 3 small specific spots. I feel like ive learned how much of a precise thing painting frames is. The old paint must be completely stripped, and the frame must be squeaky clean even before everything else. but how much you rush or get sloppy can really affect the end result when you hit the clear coat. luckily the spots i have are small enough to cover with some decals or just leave alone. what are you gonna do?

I definitely had a run or two from a clogged rattle can spray tip. But yeah, like I said, only the underside of the frame maybe didn't have as much time to let it dry super well compared to the half to full days I leave in between the coats of paint I had done before. As soon as I started spraying the clear coat on, it started happening within a minute or so. Then I go to paint the rest of the frame with the clear and it's totally fine. I've spent way too much time into painting this frame and did a legit job until this happened, but it's not too bad, so I'm gonna have to leave it. I spent about a good 2 cans of paint and a can of clearcoat. At least I'll have super coverage when paint starts scratching cause I still have most of the original paintjob underneath. I painted so thick that all the serial numbers, etc. are barely visible anymore.

Too much moisture can cause this type of scenario, too much cold does it a bit too.

If you don't like it, start over. Get down to raw (or smooth at least) put PRIMER down, let it fully dry, paint, dry, paint, dry, paint, dry, clear, dry clear, dry assemble.

That my friend is not orange peel..it is what's called wrinkling..it's when the solvents in the paints are reacting to each other..NOT GOOD!..one scratch or chip and it'll start peeling..you really should strip it now and start all over..you probably put the paint on too wet..the color coats don't need to be wet, you're just going for coverage so lighter coats and it'll dry faster in between as well..you should wait at least a few hrs after color is done and make sure it's totally dry before clearing..and clear goes down wet but even..two maybe three nice even wet coats of clear and it's a wrap..oh and make sure the frame is nice and clean before u even start..wipe it down with mineral spirits or something like that..I only paint cars for a living so you can take my advice or leave it
