Hey guys, so I've been bored and my bike needs a new paint job anyways, so I finally got around to it. I used 200 grit sandpaper, krylon primer plus paint in black and krylon clear coat. I live in an apartment building so I have to go outside paint it, bring it back in to dry lol

I don't know lol I got the bike for 100 bucks, fit forks fit bars, shadow conspiracy stem, eastern frame, mission cranks, front wheel unknown hub laced to a alienation plain black rim back wheel hazard v3 laced to a odyssey 7 ka rim, animal glh front and back all I had to fix was the driver which was 110 so I got this bike for 210 which isn't bad at all, now I gotta paint it, clean it up clean off all the rust then get it dialed

should have used rusto.. krylon is not as good

|

3/5/2014 6:24 PM

but looks good and even so nice work and dont over spray on the head tube

|

3/5/2014 7:09 PM

Yeah I thought the krylon would be good because it's a primer and a paint.. And no I did 3 coats on each part so the paint should be even, I haven't noticed any drips or any imperfections at all. For doing it in the winter and what not I'm amazed it came out so good.. I'll have a final pic up tomorrow thanks guys.

Don't put it back together tomorrow!! I know it'll be real tempting, but you should wait at least 2-3 days, TRUST ME. After priming and a few coats of paint and clearcoat, it may be dry to the touch, but likely not fully dry. I used to paint a ton, including bikes. After each coat dried, did you use a fine sandpaper on it, and then wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry before the next coat? Good luck man and I can't wait to see everything come together.

No I sanded it, cleaned the dust off, painted it, waiting about 2 or 3 hours between coats, did 3 on each part. I'm going to let it dry overnight, since about 8 pm until 1 pm tomorrow then throw on some clear coat and about 4 hours after the last coat throw it together? If not I can wait an extra day or two before reassembling it. And the the head tube is painted lol

Sounds pretty good. The thing about waiting is that there is a difference between being dry to the touch versus being dry all the way though. I've had times where I reassembled before everything was completely dry and ended up scraping up an otherwise great paint job. I always wear gloves (latex type) when handling stuff before it's fully dry to ensure I don't make any fingerprints permanently on the parts (may seem overkill but...). Anyway, it's looking good. Hopefully the paint doesn't stick to the sandpaper package your frame is on!

We'll it says on the paint 25 mins dry to touch and 1 hour fully dry and the clear coat is even less time. II'm playing it safe by waiting 4 hours and 8 between paint and clear coat and instead of the 40 mins for the clear coat coats to be dry I'm waiting 6 hours lol I'm hoping that it will be all dry and what not by then, even if it's not I'm not biking for at least a week so shouldn't be any problems

Should be good then, especially if your not riding for a week. I'm OCD about painting lol!

It's understandable no point in painting unless your going to do it right, otherwise a waste of time and money for a shit looking bike

That thread was damn good too! Where the hell did it go? I looked for it earlier but couldn't find it? There's a rawing/painting one in the How-To section, but it's not the one you started.

Yeah the forks and bars were 2 different shades of blue they looked dumb. The frame was all scratched and different colors, super rusty everywhere now it's all cleaned up and painted looks so awesome in person I can't wait for it to dry completely! And no I ride brake less

2 coats of clear isn't enough, i've found that out the hard way. Ya see, spray paint and clear coats (even automotive kinds) can't hold up to the abuse that BMX bikes go through, that's why companies anodize or powdercoat their stuff and never "paint" it. To make up for that, you need about 6 coats or more and even then it's still gonna scratch.
