I'm painting my 2 rims, 2 hubs and cranks.
I want to preserve the demolition writing on the hub. The writing itself is raw, best way to cover it from being painted over? The paint has pretty nice finish to it, would I be better off sanding it down completly and priming it or painting over that paint and scratching the surface a bit before doing so would be fine?

Also, I'll be painting the parts with montana black, would any primer do for it or would I be better off buying a montana metal primer?

Painting over the paint would be fine but you won't get nice finish as when you sand and prime it.
As for the logo, I don't know much but I guess you need something like a sticker and print the logo, then use a x-acto knife to cut it out. then stick it to the hub before you prime and paint it. then remove the sticker and clear coat it.

As mentioned above, you'll be much more satisfied with the final result if you sand/strip. It will be a lot nicer. It takes time, but that's the way to go. As far as the logo, electrical tape cut to size properly should save it. Good luck! Paint project is always a good time.

Theres not really any way to save the logo, the only thing i can think of is put like a thin piece of masking tape over it and use a razor or x acro knife to trace it out

If a I have an anodised rim then do I need to get rid off the colour before I can put primer on it? I tried paint stripper but it doesn't work on anodised parts. Also if a rim has a primer on it already but has thin scratches on the edges and aluminium is visible you think I should get rid of it and prime it again? Paint stripper doesn't work on primer either so I would have to spend days to do so

Grease lightning/Oven cleaners will remove anodizing, takes time though.
If rim has primer on it just lightly sand the scratch the area until its smooth and spot it with primer. then sand it again.

Won't the primer stick to anodized surface though?

Get a demo sticker about the same size and put it on.

Ok, i didn't read any of the other posts...because fuck you.

anyway, here's how to paint that hub and preserve the lettering.

- Go to any paint supply store and buy some GOOD blue painters tape. Brand doesn't matter.
- Go to any hobby shop and get you a hobby knife
- Place blue tape over lettering, you "should" be able to see the letters through the tape, if not you can try white painters tape/masking tape.
- Use your hobby knife and a steady hand to carefully and DELICATELY cut out the letters
- Peel off the extra shit but leaving the letters there

That's one way....

Other way is to trace the letters with a marker/pen/your dick and then peel the tape off and cut it that way, but it's a pain the sack to put those little letters onto your hub.

or just plastidip your shit, that's what i'd do.

oh, and if you need to rough up the surface, use a green scrubby pad, it's about the same as 220 grit sand paper.

also, clear coat will help protect your stuff but your painted parts are gonna scratch and cheap so fucking easy that you'll regret painting your wheels. Don't be a cheap bastard, get your shit powder coated, it's like $20 to get both rims done and they'll probably do your hubs too but disassembling them could be a hassle.

as they said, painting the hub is going to be a bitch.. i did it to a few hubs and by time they were laced some of the paint was was already chipped..

you could always get the hub anodized in a different color, places that do anodizing will usually charge less if they already have a batch of the same color you want in there tanks, i used to do it all the time to the aluminum parts when i raced rc..

Buy an oven off craigslist, buy powder coating. Run extension cords from your house/an outdoor plug to the oven outside. Preheat oven. Learn how to powder coat while preheating. Powder coat it. Throw it in the oven. Also throw in some brownies as a trophy. Wait desired time. Take out bike parts. Leave brownies, theyll be burnt to shit and taste like ass anyway. BOOM powder coated bullshit.

Or use epoxy paint like i did to my frame, and youll never get that shit off. Its solid and you dont have to clear coat it.

Use some clear tape or translucent tape and cover the writing, then use an X-acto knife and trace it, then paint over it.

I really wouldn't suggest painting over the paint because it won't bond as well and you'll end up with a rough finish and it will chip easily.

If you DO end up sanding it, either sand it all the way till it's raw, or just rough up the surface a little. If I were you, I would just sand the whole hub down and get rid of the writing, it's too much work for just a few letters.

I did a similar job with my Cinema rim, but the letters were bigger which meant I had more space between the letters, which allowed me to strip the paint, but in your case, it's hard because you might strip part of the letters.

clear/translucent tape won't seal the paint out, there's a reason us autobody guys don't use translucent tape for anything, other than that thanks for telling him nearly exactly what i did just a few posts up.

I didn't, after I painted it I just took a small piece of wood and scratched off the paint while it was just dry enough but still soft inside and it came off nicely and it didn't damage the paint around as it was engraved.
