I am having trouble getting my pegs on. I am not sure what to do with this spacer and the little nut that sticks off of the peg. I actually smushed the edge of one of the nuts. Any ideas?

Yeah, inside.
However, if you have short axles, it's better to not run a spacer at all. You always want maximum thread engagement, so sometimes running a spacer will be more dangerous and the peg isn't "on there" as good as it can be without a spacer.

Don't use a washer. The peg is the washer. That nut is to keep the peg from spinning. It goes in the dropout slot.

Everyone makes rookie mistakes.. I remember completely ruining my first hub (bearings and all) by trying to pull the axle out the wrong way.. my dumbass didn't think of removing it drive side.. you live; you learn I guess lmao.
P.S. Didn't manage to get the axel out but by the way. Ended up tossing the hub in the bin
