I'm thinking about trying out a 22'' bike. I came from Motocross but have given it up and a few buddies ride bmx so I'm giving it a shot. I'm currently riding a 20.75 with front load and it seems very cramped compared to my 250f I used to ride. Given that I want to try out a 22'' bike because I think it'll feel more natural to me. I'm not going out to do crazy tricks just ride around and have some fun with them. I also would like to ride some trails and dirt jumps this coming summer so I figured a 22'' wouldn't be too bad for that. Anyway I have only seen a couple frames, the macneil duece duece and the colony castaway in 22''. If I buy one of those frames where can I buy forks and wheel sets? Appreciate the help guys.

Have tried a 21"+ top tube? Or bigger bars? I'd try those things before moving to 22" wheels.

I have not tried a 21+ yet unfortunately most of my friends all ride 20.5. I have rode a 20.75 with top load and that did feel better however the balance still didn't feel there too me. I guess I was just looking for more stability. I'm used to something much larger and heavier haha. I may hold off and try to find a park that I can rent a larger frame to try out before I purchase something.

If interested, I have left this in chrome.

Perfect frame for trails and dirt jumping.

If I cannot find a 22'' frame I will let you know man. Those got good reviews so I wouldn't mind trying one out.

this. I would try bigger bars, or a longer stem first. maybe a longer frame... instead of building a whole bike around it.

or get a macneil deuce deuce. its a 22"tt but you use regular parts

Cool man, definitely let me know. I had the matching chrome forks but they sold shortly ago on here. I do have the matching 8,5 rise bars though.

So your saying try a 22'' tt with 20'' wheels and the rest of my current parts? I thought that might feel a little funky but maybe not.

Hes saying to try the 22 if its with the Macneil frame, That frame has a 22 inch top but is made to be used with 20 inch parts. 22 is big, hahaa

It was also suggested to run a longer stem, I wouldnt run anything longer then 53mm otherwise your front end will respond and spin slower. In all though, I went from a 53mm stem to 48 and really notice no difference length so if trying to gain more room, its best to get a longer frame.

How tall are you anyways?

I'm only 5'11''. I'm not tall really its just hard for me to adjust to a small area versus my dirtbike I used to ride. I enjoy mountain biking too but I can't do that as often as bmx since none of my friends ride MTB. I'll look into that macniel frame more. I didn't read enough apparently to realize it uses regular parts. I thought it needed custom forks etc. Do people run 22'' wheels ever or no?

Im 6'3 and the biggest id go is 21.6 with a 53mm stem. Which is big and roomy. Your size on a 22 inch frame hitting trails and jumps could be questionable....everyone has their own comfort area in what they like though... 20.75 to 21.5 or 22 is a huge difference. Smallest I would ride at my size is a 21tt, Regularly ride a 21.25 - 21.5. As for wheels, Im sure most here at least are running 20's, havent really seen much for 22's as I dont think its very common.

S&M has a 22" frame fork and wheel combo i think. There are a few others too i think.

I appreciate the advice guys. I will definitely try to ride a 21.5tt before I spend any money. If I find something I like I may go ahead and buy a complete. I have a bunch or random parts now that don't match up to be very aesthetically pleasing. It gets the job done and got me into riding but its seen better days.

|

12/4/2014 1:17 PM

I think a 21.5 would be good for you or anything of the size or larger which allows you to run 20 inch parts properly giving you a lot of options to choose from within different parts/companies. You can hit the trails, jumps or even some street or park stuff should that possibility happen Do check the for sale section here, lots of legit sellers with amazing parts, even get new stuff for a fraction of the price compared to buying it through a shop. Goodluck with everything , have any other questions or need help, definitely post

I have 20, 22, 24, 26 inch bikes.

The wheel size doesn't make the bike any larger, the size of the frame does.

I agree with the rest of these folks, unless you like spending money, get a longer frame/taller bars/stem.

If you do want to spend some money, 22 inch wheeled bikes are fun as hell. They roll over stuff a little easier, roller a little faster, jump a little further yet don't feel sluggiish like 24 and 26 wheeled bikes feel.

|

12/4/2014 7:11 PM

Get a MacNeil duece duece frame, and taller bars .....I'm only 5 10 and if I ever buy another frame it will be a 22 inch top tube forsure , having more room over the bike is always nice

I rode a 26' dj bike once and it was soo amazing, but I would never get one for myself
22 inch bmx bikes are perfect for trails, they carry your speed better and have a bit more stability if you screw up too.
I've ridden dirt bikes before, and those bigger wheels will be much more similar to them, I think you should give it a try.

I may actually build two bikes......You guys have me thinking about picking up a 21.5tt for park/street and building a 22tt with the S&M forks to run 22'' wheels also for trails and dirt. I don't mind spending money as long as its something that will last and I know I will like. Hell my motocross bikes had around 4k in them so bmx is rather cheap compared to that haha.

Good luck running 22 inch wheels on a 20 inch frame. Even if you can get the rear wheel to fit , the brakes won't reach the rim.

|

12/5/2014 5:57 AM

^^^^^^I'm confused. I thought with the deuce deuce you could run the S&M forks that are made for 22'' wheels? I'm new to this so I must be missing something. Can you explain more?

No, duece is basically a 20 inch type frame, just has a 22tt. Its for people who want to run a 20 bike but have that super long top tube.

Oh got ya I was definitely thinking wrong then haha. So what frame would be good to run a 22'' wheel setup? The colony castaway? Or do people usually have one custom made?

No, the Colony is the same as a Duece, 20inch bike with just an extremely long 22tt. You would have to go with S&M as I dont think you are going to find many compatible parts for running a 22inch bike.

Ok I'll give them a call and see what a complete 22'' would run. For now I'm eying down a new frame for park/street. I like that the pandora you have is 11.6 bb height. I think a low bb and long chainstay is going to be best for me as I'm not doing really many tricks I just enjoy riding.

Its very stable and balanced perfectly for trails. The buyer of the black version I had was also a trails rider who was looking for some time finding one. He randomly found me Google searching. My bb height of choice is 11.625 Ive rode much higher but the 11.6 seems perfect. I ride street mostly and park.

You mean a 22tt like deuce deuce or 22'' complete from S&M?

|

12/5/2014 3:52 PM

I don't think you can buy a complete 22 wheel bike anymore. Only once company made them and I can't recall who they were. It was a mountain bike company, or road bike company.

The 22 inch wheel bike specific parts are
Frame
Fork
Wheels (rims, specifically)
Tires

You can use 20 inch tubes or buy 22 inch tubes.

All the other parts are the same as a normal 20 inch wheeled bike.

Faction, S&M, InDust, twenty2(or something like that) make 22 inch frames.

S&M and Faction make 22 inch forks.

Standard and LairdFrame will make you custom anything.
