So many brands have come and gone in BMX and Profile has truly stood the test of time. Their tight crew keeps things moving forward and an integral part of that crew is Matt Coplon. Matt is a BMX lifer who, to this day, rides more and rides harder than a lot of sponsored riders out there.

It’s hard to really give Matt a job title at Profile, but he manages the team, handles sales, spends time behind cameras, organizes trips, and does so much more.

In addition to his gig at Profile, Matt keeps the scene in Tampa, Florida rolling, writes books, and plays music. He really is a jack of all trades.

Got a question for Matt? Want to know what goes on behind the scenes at Profile? How they pick riders? Advice for getting a job in the BMX world? Ask here!

Matt is off on Saturday for the Maiden America 2015 Tour, so he’s only hanging out in the forum until the 20th. Get your questions in NOW!

Any good alligator stories?

Are you shitty at designing parts?

How did Grant end up on Profile with all that pedal pressure and sloppy style?

Any good broken parts storys, I'm sure profile has many.

Sweet riding to Neurosis!

Are there any stretches or warmups you do to prepare fore answering 10,000 questions about the Z-Coaster by people who complain about the price yet are obsessed by it?

Actual question: what's the deal with Madera? Is it it's own company that just uses all the same equipment/space or is it a sub-company of profile? Any of the same employees or it's own entity? Always wondered for no reason.

Top 5 bands that come to mind first....and go!

Can you tell us a brief history on your involvement in music?

BMX has had its changes throughout all of it's years with different eras and such. You've been around to experience it all from the good to the bad. Is there anything currently in BMX you'd like to see happening differently? If so, how should it happen? Also, what are some things you're stoked on that is happening now?

This is will be a hard one... All time favorite Profile part?

Why are my Madera cranks the only pair of cranks I've ever owned that need to be re tightened after every ride?
Why has my Profile mini hub skipped since it was brand new and neither of my Antigrams have ever skipped?

|

6/18/2015 9:44 AM

Like some of the other guys have stated already, why didnt you tell me to buy Tree hubs because my profile mini skips all the time. And yes, your customer service is awful. Profile needs to hire competent people to answer the phones.

Thanks. Appreciate it. Still one of my favorite bands.

Ha! I think a lot of the questions are valid though. As far as price goes, I can see the reservation, but I think in time, the performance of the hub will weigh in support of the price. I think what a lot of people have a hard time grasping is that we're a company that makes 99.9% of our product in the US, and pays living wages to our employees. There's 22 of us here, we have a big shop with a lot of equipment, which equals a lot of overhead.
As far as the ZCoaster goes, there are actually a couple parts in there that are really difficult to make. The slack-Cam rings being one (which is a break even part for us), on top of 4 other pieces made with our EDM machine. The machine is quite expensive to run and in post-production, each of those parts gets sent out for a special coating.
That's the tip of the iceberg.

About stretching: Coffee serves as my stretching technique. ha!

About Madera, that is also a good question. Madera is the Sister brand to Profile. It is owned by Profile, but serves to make more streamlined components to bring cost down. Manufacturing, sales, and promo are all done by the same people, the only thing that is different is the team (aka our marketing organism).

Thanks for the questions!

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm one of the main people who answers the phone here. I'm here to help. If you have an issue, give me or Shane in warranty a call: 727-391-7370

Sorry to hear about the hubs but as I've mentioned below, I take/direct most of the calls here at the shop. Pretty positive I (for sure) nor our warranty guy would have said that.

I'd be glad to help you out or direct you to warranty if you'd like. Give us a ring: 727-391-7370
And ask for Matt.

Thanks man.

Have or create a personal connection within the industry. Our industry is unfortunately pretty small, so knowing someone who can help you get your foot in the door is pretty important.
I know many people are pulled from having jobs at bike shops too. From there, you almost define your experience. I've had a couple friends from shops who have ended up working for respective companies.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the question.

Day for sure. The earlier the better.

That is a good question. In all honesty, flatland. It takes the most mental strength. Trying times arise when you sit in a parking lot for 8 hours trying to pull one trick.

That could cause serious argument. ha! Historically: East Coast, West Coast. But, there are so many incredible scenes tucked into the interstices of US geography. Too any to name: Denver, Austin, Providence, Boston, Milwaukee, Minneapolis....the list goes on, but those are some cities I've been to recently will solid scenes.

Thanks for the questions!

I am, but I do keep it personal and would never judge someone else for what they do. The reasoning is quite personal: the environment I grew up in was a bit harsh when it came to "partaking." I'm also prone to an addictive personality. Luckily, bmx filled that achilles heal for me.

It also helped when I was 13 and heard Minor Threat's song "straight edge" for the first time. That got me real stoked. 25 years later, here I am...

Man, that is a really difficult question. I'm going to try to shotgun it:
1. Jawbox: Novelty.
2. The Sisters of Mercy: First, Last and Always.
3. Neurosis: Through Silver in Blood.
4. Portraits of Past: 00010010111
5. The Cure: Pornography

Thanks for the questions!

If I had to choose a barn yard entity, I'd roll a pig. Have you read Orwell's "Animal Farm?" Good read...pigs are pretty smart little fells.

That's pretty rad. Straight edge represent. Portraits of Past is pretty awesome too, good album. Do you listen to a lot of other skramz stuff like Orchid, Saetia, Face for Radio and all that?

I won't bash profile but my crank arms and pedals do get seized a lot even on the cranks i had from 2006 and the ones from 2013. I used grease and everything never had problems with other cranks any words of advice on that?

45 refs and counting check profile.

That's a pretty kind statement. I think the basic philosophy is treat others like you'd want to be treated. No one wants to be attacked, or criticized.

Success in bmx?
I'm happy doing what I do. I love riding, I love my job, and I've got a great support group of friends and family. That's all I can ask for.

Success in general?
Happiness. Plain and simple.
I could die tomorrow and think, "you know what, I lived a good life."

Thanks for the kind words and the questions.

Awesome. Yea, I do! I was in a band called Reversal of Man and we got to play several shows with Orchid and Saetia in the late 90's. Good era of music. We were actually on the same label as orchid: Ebullition.

On the cranks, do you mean that once tightened, they will not get loose? If that's the case, I'm not sure? I use standard grease here in the shop. If anything, I ride so much that sometimes my pedals come loose. From personal experience, I just dab a little bit of lock tite on there and I'm good to go.

Hope that helps and thanks for the questions.

Funniest thing I've seen Crandall do: Treat everyone to icecream from an icecream truck, while in his socks, in Pittsburgh.

Favorite spot in Richmond? How about I go even further and say, its ONE of my most favorite cities in the US.

Running into you? I'll be there Saturday and Sunday, June 27th and 28th. Hope to run into you!

Thanks for the questions.

Like one of my most favorite scenes in the US (Providence/Pawtucket), its filled with riders who are super motivated and super positive. Positivity is key...

I love Florida because of the riders who live here...loving something makes it super easy to want to give back.
It's infective.

Thanks for the question Cara!
