I don't know the name of the model so hope the pics can ID it, the thing's definitely not from their newest line-up, it has 4 pawls not 3, the problem is that I cannot get it to stop making, on occasion and for short bursts, this metal-on-metal grinding noise! I just took it apart last night, wiped the hub-body out and wiped the driver off, and put lithium grease on the edges where they meet - I spun the cone/lock screws back onto both sides after heavily greasing the faces of the bearings they'd touch (I have exactly 1 bolt-washer on each side between the hub bearing and drop-out, hope that's proper!)

The driver will also sometimes engage the pedals ie if I'm riding along and took my feet off the pedals, sometimes they'll spin on their own (short bits, like start then stop then start, like it's just barely enough of something-touching-something to make the spinning hub grab the should-be-stationary driver, which then pulls the chain to spin my cranks)

Oh and lastly, if there isn't an OEM hub guard for the non-drive side of this, what would you guys recommend? I was riding a generic primo DSG but the thing's at the end of its life (and I'd rather have a full guard now that my driver isn't on my grind side anymore - this hub is LHD I grind right-side only!)

Is there a really thin spacer between the hub bearing and driver bearing? It looks like a hazard v3, any chance it could have the wrong driver?

The driver engaging the pedals is a normal and healthy behavior.

I use this as a measurement for my chain tightness, if it's too tight ... cranks won't spin on their own smile)

I feel moronic because I've opened that several times now and I think that it had one originally, yet I don't recall seeing it the last time or two I opened the hub up... Shit. Not a biggie though, will check next time I open it and try one if it looks like it'd take it, but for now I've got the noise stopped, I took it apart & cleaned/lubed it again, re-seated it (it's a bitch to seat the driver into the hub, unsure if it's distortion in the hub body or just tight fit on the axle) and now it's going smooth, haven't heard a noise or had any cranks spinning from the driver pulling them.

I agree, it *looks* like a hazard v3, and when I got a replacement retention clip from Empire (great company!!) it fit just like the OEM did, but it's for sure got 4 pawls and the drivers I see for that hub are all 3-pawl - I cannot imagine that the wrong driver would fit and work though!! Are there even odyssey hubs with 4-pawl drivers? I built this wheel close to 2mo ago and it's my daily-driver, I haven't had any instances of slip and that's with 1 of my 4 pawls being very....slow to respond, lol!

edit: this was bought used so it's entirely possible it's the wrong driver, but something else is that they gave me a 10t driver as well - also 4-pawl and identical in every way to the 9t one I'm currently using with it. Did the hazard come with a 10t driver as well? I've got no way to know if that 10t driver was supposed to have come with it or not but it's definitely the same make/manufacturer as the 9t driver

haha no way, your pedals should not be moving on their own! And while I love a tight chain, if you're experiencing pedal-spin but then have the chain tight enough that you've stopped that....that chain is going to be hating life right there! A proper driver, correctly lined-up to the sprocket, should never ever give tension on the chain when coasting.

I believe (not 100% sure) that quite a few brands, including the hazard v1, have 4 springs/pawls and are the same dimensions as the newer hazard driver. I actually installed an older (4 pawl) hazard driver in my friends hub (can't remember what brand, but not odyssey) and it worked fine.
I haven't stripped the v3 myself so I don't know if that spacer should be there, but i once left it out on my profile mini and blew a driver bearing in one ride

Yeah having anything out of alignment on the bearing seems to crush it quick! When I blew these out, it happened in just a couple minutes of riding, I'd re-seated the driver improperly so when I tightened it it had all the pressure on just half the bearing's face, they were both so shredded that their faceplates were thin stringy circles of black plastic!

I've got another (10t, 4 pawl) driver in there now, but the bearing on it is larger than the old one and is larger than the diameter of the cone nut that buts against it, so the bearing's outer ~1.5mm ring is exposed, definitely not a good situation lol I'm just hoping to have the 9t one back in action before the 10t dies!
