What's the difference between aero and normal/straight rims? Can someone explain the differences both performance wise and structurally? I can see the physical difference but I'm not sure how it affects strength and whatnot

Aero Rims are a lot lighter as less Material is needed. An Aero design can often be weaker but not necessarily much weaker. The reason Rims like G-Sport Birdcages are known to break easily is because they have other features that also make them lighter, such as they are thinner, and not completely because they are Aero Rims. Having said that the angled rim can have an effect on the spoke holes. You cannot use Brakes on fully Aero Rims.
