Well my knees hurt really bad after every time I ride my bike. I'd rather not ruin my knees for the rest of my life! But when I ride my mountain bike, my knees don't hurt. So should I stop riding bmx?

Didn't you just start less then a month ago? Knees are overrated who needs them.

No you should not quit.

Normally people that ride do not have this trouble. Shit i have a friend who doesn't have this problem and he has to have surgery on his knees from time to time.

What you need to do before riding is STRETCH thoroughly. Stretching allows oxygen to get circulated into your muscles and that helps a lot while riding. You should also try to not lock your legs while riding, shouldn't be hard at all. Also, if you're young, it isn't riding, its just a new muscle being used that you hadn't before. Maybe try aspirin if it really gets to you.

BMX Biking in the proper way is not bad for your body. Obviously taking a fall won't be great for you, but you'll be okay. If you stretch and try to stick to the proper technique of not landing flat and don't pump your tires to 100000 psi or anything, you should be good. I really recommend when you're just getting into it to not go nuts about every new ache and pain. I think if you send yourself down giant stairsets or something, you're gonna be in some pain, no doubt, but trails, park, regular street, won't really harm you much at all.

If you're like me, where you have been riding bikes for as long as you could walk, you won't notice many new aches. I normally notice things like my back hurting from pulling hard, maybe some neck pain from turning your head really hard.

Yea I started not long ago.... Here's the long story. In 7th grade, my knees were in perfect shape, then I started riding scooters. About a year later, my knees started to have pain in them, it became worse and worse until it was really painful to walk up stairs and bend my knees! So I went to the doc. And he said that it should go away in a few weeks!! (This was all like 1 year ago). So I sold my scoot. My knees still hurted like crap for like 2 months, and then the pain started subsiding really slow. And about a year later, they barely hurt anymore! Now I'm in 9th grade and picked up bmx. To this day my knees aren't fully healthy! I'm kinda starting to get pain right now when I ride. I DONT want to repeat that cycle!! Longest story ever!

I don't think it's growing pains, cuz I think I did most of my growing lol. I'm 5'9 and 15 yrs old. Plus, why would it hurt back then, and come back now, when I ride bmx?

Have you ever tried those knee support things they came out with for athletes? Something like this.
P.S. I've never used the site before so I don't know if you should buy from it or not, just making an example.

This and so something OTHER THAN RIDING FOR EXERCISE.

Go to the gym and work out. It will help strengthen your muscles and help pain subside.

My guess is it's growing pains. If you don't ride much over winter, see how they are in the spring, you might just need rest.

I ride to stay on two wheels and have fun!

I think I need to wear knee pads so if I hit my knees they wouldn't hurt so much. Like 3 days ago I hit my knees on the concrete, trying to do a damn barspin lol, my knees still hurts today. And I ripped my shoes too lol!

|

I had to get knee pads. I got lazy and tried to half-ass do a feeble on a high ledge and just slammed my knee into the top of my bars. Put my right leg out of commission for 2 weeks.

My guess is, that is what it is. I would definitely see a Dr who knows what they are dealing with and can educate you on things.

I am in my 40s now, when I was your age (back then) they pretty much told me things were normal and would just go away.
I use to kick box, race bmx, play soccer and baseball.
At my age my knees are still wrecked, along with my hands, feet and elbows.

Hey man, are you compressing after your hopping or 180ing etc... Because that could be your big problem, otherwise like Maxiumus said make sure your stretching before and after your ride.

Good luck! smile

My whole body will hurt for a good week or so after a full day session. Occasional muscle spasms and random shots of pain (arthritis?) But i just try my best not to complain. After all, what is life without bikes? Ill worry about the permanent effects when im in a wheelchair. Wait- no i won't, ill be too busy shredding a bowl in it.

I have a herniated disc in my lower back & I'm still shredding.

Get a second opinion from other doctors, figure out what it actually is, and then get treatment.

When I fucked my back up like 5-6 months ago, I read into it and several people who did what I did were saying their doctor said they'd never be the same & that they'd have to cut certain activities & shit, one of them even rode motocross. Most the replies were "Get a better doctor."

I'm still not 100%, but the pain is manageable to where I can ride without it bothering me, but after a hard day of riding, usually the next morning it's hurting but usually the pain goes down a lot after some stretching to where it doesn't bother me unless I sit in a certain position long enough or something.

Point is, pain is manageable. I'm sure there's something out there that can treat you or speed up the healing process or something.

Rant..

Stop fucking bitching about your knees. Be grateful you have a bike even. This is coming from someone who has neither ; both bikes got stolen worth 3500 + and my knees are 25x worse then yours. I experience pain constantly everyday since around age 10 . I have a "disease" ( Not actually a disease ) where my thigh muscle is too strong for my knee muscle , to the point where it pulls that muscle off my bone . So my bone deforms to try to keep it on. I've been to over 4 specialists and all of them told me," Don't do anything athletic" Imagine getting told you're not supposed to ever run or play sports or bike because it can fuck your knees up to walk. I was told , and I can quote this,"Just become a gamer" . The bump where the muscle is off , if I bang itat all , I can't walk for days. Just putting a figure on it hurts , so if I fall on it , I'm fucked. So what do I do? I BMX , I run long distance ( Currently have a school record as well as 10th place in our district ) , I work out , I have a job that's physically demanding , and I'm still kicking. If you complain about bumps and scraps then you're a pussy. I might not have working knees by age 30 and it's possible that surgery can wreck my ligaments so I won't be able to do anything active again. So stop being a little bitch about it and suck it up. I hate being that guy but if you had my knees you'd understand. I can't even bike up a HILL because of them , they're that bad. But seriously , go and enjoy biking.
