I spent most of the day with my buddy at Cherokee Veterans skatepark and it was fun, I'm glad we went. I don't go to parks often, I ride a lot of street.

Is it practically guaranteed to hear shit-talking about ANYTHING that isn't a skateboard? My friend brought his mountain bike and I rode my BMX. There were a few other BMX there, plenty of scooters, kids, and even some girls were shredding.

And sure enough the skaters of all ages didn't like it. At one point a few skaters made it a point to run into very young kids who unknowingly snaked their line. I wrongly assumed everyone would be cool and at least respect each other, even if they got forced out of a line every now and then.

The bottom line is that the youngest kids look up to the older ones, aka YOU. You have a chance to be their hero, like compliment them if they try something new (even if it wasn't that great), or help them if they're struggling with a trick. Of course you really fuck this up when you insult them and make them feel bad, especially because there's a good chance they didn't know any better.

I had a great sesh, and met some cool people, skaters included, but I wanted to vent about some bullshit that I hope to never see. Everyone is trying to have fun. Don't be a cock.

Yeah that sounds pretty lame. Granted, scooter kids will drop in en mass and take up whole sections of park for hours and it can get pretty irritating. The best thing to do is say something, in a decent way.

There's always gonna be punks like the kind you described, and luckily you usually don't have to deal with them everyday. It can be really tough however if the park is 'skate only' and you have to sneak in in the first place. In that case you have very little leverage in trying to have a word in with people who cause problems. If there is one in their group who is a bit of an outlier, not causing problems but is tight with the ones who are, talk to him/her instead, I'd say.

Yeah at my local park it's the same, just the other day some kids were trying to tell other kids that they weren't allowed to be there, so I did the right thing imo and stood up for them and getting it so they can ride. Even if it's not you just stick up for the little ones.

I've been riding skateparks on both skateboards and BMX for almost 20 years, and it's basically been like that the whole time. After you earn some respect I don't think it matters much what your riding. It's like being a freshman in high school. You deal with a little hazing from the older guys. I started as a little kid, but I don't think it would be the same if I started as an adult. It's pretty much just kids being kids, and it's a part of life no matter what your doing. Especially anything out of the norm, prepare to get bashed for it. Just be true to yourself. Who cares what people think. Life's too short.

A lot of skateboarders think they have some kind of entitlement. But any local at a park does too really. And yeah, scooter kids are generally stupid. I always keep an eye out for the young kids and I love to see them having fun no matter what they're on, but the early teen scooter kids are born with some kind of mental deficiency. They're the ones that do what they want and don't look where they're going. They're all retarded.

I guess I'm big enough and old enough for skaters to leave me alone. But I remember the locals at a park I've never been to before would always almost try to get in your way and cause an argument. They soon stop if you don't back down though

Just don't be a dick. Apologise if you get in someone's way, and say "no worries" if someone gets in your way and apologises. If someone gets in your way and doesn't apologise, call them a dick under your breath, that's usually enough to make them look out for you

Skateboarders feel that way because in many cases skateboarders are the ones who did the work to get the park built in the first place. They're called Skateboard parks. I'm not saying I agree with that but I can see the point.

A big problem with all this is mostly etiquette. A lot of kids don't have a clue about park etiquette and their parents don't either. I was riding a bowl and a little kid dropped in and rode through. I almost ate shit. I asked what he was doing and told him he can't ride the bowl when someone is in it. He said he could. I gently explained to him what would happen to him when a 235 pound man on bike hits a 7 or 8 year old kid on a scooter.

Maybe some cases. My most local park was petitioned for for years by bmxers. It wasn't until there were skaters getting involved that anyone took much notice. We had trails that were pretty famous, which the local council let us use/dig, but they set strict boundaries. If we went outside of those boundaries to make a line possibly, they'd flatten all of it (this happened twice that I know of).

Then, when we finally got a skatepark it was mostly designed by skaters. After a year or so they banned bikes. So we kicked off, and they built a not as good bike park next to the skatepark, on rough concrete.
They eventually combined both parks (when the skating and bmx scenes died down) and rearranged everything. Again designed by skaters. There's a jump box with zero room for run up, but plenty of open space behind the quarter you use to get speed for it. Literally only a handful of people can clear that box. There's some cool "street" things there, but it's poorly laid out so it all has weird run ups, and no flow.

And, in my town they're building a multi story skatepark. I offered help countless times and voiced my opinions. It's all been ignored. And they're calling it a skateboard park. This is after a year of me petitioning to get a free, outdoor skatepark from our council. I've literally been put to the bottom of the pile. We're the only town locally that doesn't have a council funded skatepark.

Rant over.

I literally have 6 parks within 5 minutes in any direction so I usually avoid cloverdale on the weekends peak days but its so new and sick to ride so I try hit it in the mornings..... After 10 the scooter kids show up and they just fucking drop in without a care and pop up like gophers out of the bowls. No good. The skaters will usually find there own lines. If its to crowded the old Langley skate park is always empty... I have never had any one say anything to me but I'm old and scary, when I see little shits being little shits I'll usually try stick up for the little guys but it doesn't happen a lot around me, maybe cause the hours I ride.

Know what you mean, like my local town has been fighting for a bmx park for awhile now we have found the perfect setup for it even offered to fundraiser the money to build it and the city says no. And parents use our local skate park as a daycare so we get all these little kids in the way, like today I was trying to do some jumps over a ledge and these kids decided to just chill on it it took me 8 times of asking them to move to get it cleared enough to ride it.

It's gotten to the point I'm so damn sick of scooter retards infesting skateparks and not watching where they go , I'll just go do my line , half the time they purposely swerve into my line thinking I'll stop for them and theyll get a kick out of it , but then I just run them over , little fuckers gonna learn the hard way

Don't seem to have issues with skaters these days , the common enemy is the scooter infestation seems to have taken allot of the target off us bmx guys around where I am , I usually get along pretty good with skaters

I do the same thing hahaha yesterday some kid on a scooter swerved into me cause he wasn't paying attention and his headtube caught my peg and he ate shit and I rode away fine cause I was paying attention. The other week some idiot on a scooter almost swerved into me too and I just kicked him... literally, with my foot, to move him out of my path.

everyone gets in everyone's way though eventually, I have more issues with braindead skaters who push before they look then bitch like it's my fault when I'm already mid trick.

the real problem at the park I frequently go to are fucking little hoodrat kids on (probably stolen) mountain bikes and little girls bikes doing wheelies around the park, getting in everyone's way, and just thinking they're the shit when they're just shit. That gets on my nerves more than anything.

Fuck those cunts . Let them snake me . I'm riding a 30 lb piece of steel with pegs and metal pedals . They WILL take the L . Let them bitch .

It's hard not to laugh at people who are that vile , jokes on the plank pushers who think it's "cool" to be an asshole but 9/10 times they pop the board and it goes flying across the skatepark .

I have some VERY , VERY talented skateboarding friends who are legitimately about to get sponsored by some big corporations and they treat almost everyone with respect . Shit talking friends and just having fun ya , but overall real skateboarders don't beak other people . The ones at that park are just wannabes .

our parks actually really fucking chill. there's the groups of locals that come a lot, and it's really cool actually. occasionally we get the roadmen there and people just trying to start shit, but apart from that it's nice. only other "annoying" thing is that there's barely any bmxers there usually. sometimes we get the group of bikers coming but apart from that it's just the older guys and they're at work half the time, so i'm usually the only kid there on a bmx lol.

Never really got shit-talked by any skaters except just once at the Nashua NH skatepark. Normally get along well/chat up the skaters at whatever park I'm at for the day. Not a huge fan of skooters, I normally just fly in their faces after a warning to get them cleared out.

Also OP a mountain bike is a very good way of getting shit talked at a skatepark. No one does tricks on MTBs at skateparks, theyre just pointlessly in the way.

we have 3 parks that I ride aruond here that allow BMX, and you can go at specific times to avoid most of the congestion. The best time to ride any park is Sunday morning between 8am and noon. No stoners; no douches; no scooter dweebs...just old guys and possibly a couple sons. It is pretty cool actually..like we are our own "culture" who comes out at dawn. BMX church.

The smaller park will fill up with soccer moms and their scooter brats by noon, so we are done by then. The bigger park fills in with the cell phone camera wielding-"I am going to sit on my skateboard, smoke and Instagram pics of myself" crowd at about the same time. It becomes more of a teen social club, with not much skating cause everyone is just standing around.

Afternoons are for mountain biking for sure.

The parks I use don't tend to get a lot of thugs...those types are mstly in the downtown parks, and there is a lot of fights there. Again, because the park is more of a hangout, with only 5% of the people actually there to skate or ride.

Off hours and inclement weather are the best riding times/days for me. Give me a 50F degree cloudy day at 9am, and an empty park for sure!!

Scooters should be banned, or at least taught some etiquette before they step foot in a skatepark. You would think they own the damn park by the way they act. It just seems like they never learn the unwritten rules of the skatepark.

Funny story, these two Teenie girls decided to sit on the tabletop and chill even though they clearly saw me and another bmx'r were using it, so after multiple attempts on being nice and asking them nicely to move we just went and gapped over them, which got them to move quickly.

It's sadly pretty common. Kids struggle to tolerate things they don't understand. Skaters don't ride, so they tend not to understand our lines etc.

They also tend to think they own everything, and anyone else is wrong. I've gone from the guy who would ignore them and just ride to the guy who will tell the kids making fun of others to stop. It doesn't help their image. It doesn't make them cool. If anything, it deters future kids from their sport.

Parks are busy. People are going on their own lines. Gotta watch where you go. Maybe headphones should be outlawed on parks. Seems to be half the issue. They have them up so loud you can hear THEIR music clearly, and they cannot hear anything, so they cut everyone off, then get pissed at YOU for it.

Their founding skaters would be pissed if they saw that kind of attitude. We all ride the same types of places these days-and we all do it for fun. Why get your undies in a knot about it?

I am sick and tired of the "cliques" that this sport has recently developed. We should embrace the fact that we all ride a little kids bike, and not worry about the small details. When you take riding in its most basic form, we are all the same.

All my local parks are pretty much ALWAYS filled with scooter kids.... in my area there are not many BMX riders or skaters.... I ocasionally see some skateboarders but rarely see BMX riders... at my biggest local there are usually more BMX riders but still very rarely. There's also alot of like 5 year old scooter kids on Razors and those 3 wheeled scooter things who just ride aimlessly around the park and there parents are following them filming them and talking to the other scooter mom's and whatnot and stand in the middle of the park just blocking everybodys lines.... And all the teenage scooter kids are always vapeing and doing drugs in the woods around the park and I just think, "Wow, you're cool" but all the guys I ride with are all scooter riders but the guys I hang out with are actually good and do flips and whatnot and don't do drugs or anything stupid but I'm really just wanting to get some more BMX riders to hang with....

Just Ride....
