Skyway Mags

So, I've wondered for a while about the practicality of buying a set of Skyway Tuffs. I have search the Great Google and come across some very opposing views. I would love to pick some up and ride them, but I'm just so confused as to if they will end up not being worth the money. My dad used to ride, and said they were great, and he never broke a pair. I am also not what many would call a "smooth" rider, so I really don't know if it is worth the ~$100 for a set, but just to play with them would be fun.

I would get these: Skyway Tuff II

Any thoughts (aside from "those are crap", "their ugly as hell", and shit like that) are wanted, and thanks to those that reply.

are you trying to make an old school build? if not, spoked wheels are of much better quality

No, I was think of putting them on my current bike. That is what a lot of what I was reading said, and one person made a review and claimed that they were near the strength of Alex triple walls, lol. Thanks, I will just keep keep my current wheel set, and continue with normal wheels.

they really aren't that good, especially compared to anything on the market today

Bad idea, If you bend them you can't true them straight again (as most people do regularly with spokes) and If you crack a spoke that's it, time for new wheels. If plastic wheels were good they would have grown to be successful and metal would have been pretty much dropped

Very true Joe. Thank you both for the replies and insight. One more thought, would they hold up to flatland, I'm starting to get into it, and it wouldn't see that much of impact.

worth every dollar.... if you bend them your one bad ass dude? Down side they do have a 3/8 axle. They are heavy, if you want old school and spoke rim look up Z rims

If you bend them you can put them in the freezer to straiten them out!

Seriously. As someone who grew up riding mags/z-rims, I can attest to why they aren't used by any hardcore riders.

Save your money.

sky mag for lyfe

|

Bang Bang bmx

7/30/2014 6:57 PM

you dont want to run skyways. about 45psi is all you gonna get in those. no strength at all in fact you can twist them around with your hands. and yes they crack very easy.

Man if I rode skyway mags if pump that shit up to 110 , higher pressure has always made my metal wheels last long

|

7/31/2014 5:21 AM

they're fun and cool, a novelty.

truth: you cant run over 40psi, they're heavy as fuck, and flex.

you can try... nothing wrong with that. about 70-80 psi that tire is coming off of that mag or the mag simply is gonna break. the only mags that ever held up were called spins and they sucked ass too.

They're just bad. Always were. The freezer thing to straighten them is a myth. I've seen one snap and it wasn't pretty (that was in the mid 90's when a front skyway was cool for a little while)

That's cool and all... but this thread is from 2014.
A bike check would be a better alternative.

Yeah I didn't notice the date but I never check anyway because old threads still help. Sidenote: where do I post a bike check? Video or still pics? Thanks man

Before you get to general bmx talk, below it there is a section called bike checks and you post it in there. smile
