I find as a beginner that riding a bike that is smaller is much easier to learn on. Is there anything wrong with riding smaller bikes?

How small are we talking? Generally, a smaller bike/frame/etc will be easier the throw around, so tricks etc will be easier to do. However, the bike will be less stable, so doing tricks consistently or at speed will be harder. So it's best to have a bike which suits what you're trying to do. No point having a bike that you can throw around easily if you can never land anything on it
