How do I install them after the crank removal tool bottoms out?

I just smack them with a mallet until they're on. Use a lot of grease.

The tool shouldn't bottom out, make sure you've got enough spacers. Or, just tighten the crank bolts.

Once it's on the splines just use the bolts

Hmmm

Tighten the crank bolts. The removal tool is completely pointless because of this single reason.

the tool allows for more leverage though and are always steel, I've had cranks that were a fucking bitch to install even with grease and the bolts were aluminum, tightening them would most likely strip them. so it's not always pointless

but yeah, sounds like you need more spacers if the tool bottomed out against the spindle. you need a little space after the end of the spindle in the crank arm
