So I Went to Court Today...

Well i went to court. It, of course, opened my eyes to a few things. Holy crap, who the hell sues a BLIND guy for not cutting his grass soon enough? This poor guy had to be 90% blind. They were saying he had six weeks to keep up with it and if he doesnt he gets a big fine or something. What the hell. The poor guy probably cant afford to pay anyone for it and obviously cant do it himself. But i digress...

A while back i got into a little trouble for riding in Wheeling Skatepark and it sucked. I never had dealt with a worse cop. First off, fuck him for being an idiot and giving a ticket, and fuck him for being a K-9 unit. He was really rude and im tired of this. I don't mind working at a soup kitchen, because i do believe it is good for things, but i do NOT think punishing people for riding a bike is okay. I need to do something about all this, so here is my plan, I am tight with a guy that funded it and i am gonna get him to help me. I have a good amount of friends that would definitely help me and we wanna get it legal. I know to get to city council, etc.

What should I say? What is the best possible argument as to why bikes should be allowed? Does an online petition help?

and for the sake of the argument, do you guys think it was fair for them to sue a blind, poor guy for not cutting his grass?

The least you could do is say "Why give a guy on a bike a ticket when half the fuckers here sell and smoke pot."
Honestly I think it's bullshit.. there are better things to do with your time then fuck with dudes riding at the skate park.. but you know, cops gotta meet their quota on tickets. And lawsuits also.. bikes aren't approved so they aren't covered by insurance. cant really see where you can win.. you can only possibly overturn the no bikes rule eventually.

I think it's fucked up.. give the blind guy some assistance... justice system is fucked in this country.

First off, if the Dude is BLIND give the man some help!! If You take so much offense to His lawn being so long why don't YOU cut it!? There's a thought Fucking Douchers!

Most Cops are like that though! Oh look a guy dealing drugs or a little old woman has just been smacked in the face & had her bag stolen. Oh wait! A young man on a BMX Bike with No Brakes!!!! Arrest Him & prosecute him to the full extent of the law!!!

I honestly applaud You for trying to get Bikes allowed in the Park! Even if they demand plastic pegs etc. Get them in!!! Plastic Pegs do less Fucking damage than skateboard trucks!!!

Sorry to here about the ticket. What they charge you with? Did you get fined also? I have been through city council a few time about bike/ skate parks. It's a tough process. Get as many people involved this includes grandma's, mom, dad, business owner's. .. Talk to everyone let them know the park is safer then the streets with aggressive drivers ect. Find a great speaker for your group, someone that is an adult with a good reputation in your area. Then have them speak at the
Council meeting for you. A bunch of kids showing up at a council meeting will make it tougher for everyone.?

Kids show up. I went to a council to allow bikes in or park, they were impressed that a bunch of kids showed up. Including four adults and that a kid lead them (me). They said that persuaded them more than anything else.

Your right biggybuggy. Yes the kids need to show up too. Have everyone involved just like you were. Thanks man

Both Brian & Biggy are correct in the same way haha... Get as many people together as possible, show up & make Your intentions known, You do need someone who is good with their words, articulate etc, doesn't matter what age they are! It helps to plan ahead, have at least a basic idea of what You're going to say, speak calmly, slowly & make sure to explain Your main points, like Brian said, Riding on the Streets can be dangerous for both You, pedestrians, vehicles yada yada yada. I'm sure You'll do totally fine!

No need to thank. Everything can go two ways really. A group could strongly benefit from an adult leader, but in certain cases (that are quite rare) children and teens need to take hold of some things. My experience doing that taught me a lot about debate and how to work people. And a good idea that worked for me was looking at nearby town's rules on bikes in the skatepark and presenting them to the city council. (Assuming they benefit your cause). So what I think you should do that worked for me:

1. Present yourself and your colleagues and thank the council for having time to listen to you.
2. State your cause.
3. Weigh in the reasons they do not allow bikes in the skatepark, do not argue by calling them stupid, argue with WHY they are stupid and offer a solution to their concerns.
4. Ask if they have questions. Prepare for questions. Study up.
5. Conclude. Thank them for listening, and ask once more for them to change their policies.
6. Sit down. Waot out the rest of the meeting. THEN leave.

Now, for a little bit of info. You need to go to your city council. Call the city or go to the council's building and ask when the next meeting is. Now, during the meeting they will discuss many things concerning budget and such, then they will ask for public comment, this is your time to speak. After speaking, there may be more meeting, do not leave until the meeting is over. It is more of an etiquette and respect thing and may be the make or break thing. And of anybody comes with you, tell them this.

1. NO PHONES. YOU'RE PART OF THIS, TURN THAT SHIT OFF AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE MEE.
2. Be quiet. Nobody wants to act in favor of a crowd of disrespectful jerks.
3. Pay attention to the entire meeting. Kinda shows you care about the community.
4. The police cheif will be their, they are required to be on the board. So no muttering under the breath about cops being trash, it's called respect, not necessarily for the cops or board, but for YOU. For what you're working for.

Good luck, don't fail.

Might be helpful to have bikers and skaters in there as a coalition.

SHOW A NEED.

Just saying "We should be allowed" isn't enough. GET EVERY RIDER THERE. ALL OF THEM.

Talk to local adults from the area around the park. Get quotes about how bikes should be allowed. Ask them to come to meetings.

Talk to Police officers, the Mayor of town, ANYONE holding public office, ask for support.

Again, SHOW A NEED for a place for riders to go.

Best quote ever- "If your town does not have a skatepark, your town IS a skatepark". Granted the park is there, but this means every rider that shows up is out on the streets, where it is not safe. Bring up stats about kids getting hit by cars, and how this park allowing bikes could LOWER that number. Explain that allowing bikes in the park will lessen kids riding the streets, grinding ledges and hopping stairs, and provide a SAFE LEGAL PLACE TO GO. The ultimate goal is getting kids off the streets with a fun activity that gets them off the video game systems and away from the computer.

Talk to other cities with parks that allow bikes, ask about damage etc, and what made them decide to let bikes in. Get testimonies from other cities parks and rec boards, officials etc.

ALSO BEFORE CITY COUNCIL SEES YOU YOU NEED TO GO THROUGH PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD. Ask to speak to the head of the board, and explain your cause. If you have their support, things will go a lot smoother.
