Well today i was riding with my friend on this magical rail that we aquired (dont ask how) and he hadnt ridden in maybe 2 weeks and i was pulling good grinds and whatnot and he went (first time he had even touched the rail!!) and did a perfect toothhanger and this is the first time he even rode a rail, he had always done ledges, and seriously could do it 10 for 10 easy and i cant get close to that on this rail (the rail is awkward how it is) and this kid seriously does this shit all the time, he always lands brand new tricks constantly without even thinking twice about it. This got me thinking, are some people just born with God given talent at bmx? I mean yeah, some tricks i got easy without much thought (180s, sliders, crank arm grinds, wall rides, etc.) but it seems he honestly just does it no worries. What do you guys think? God given talent, or just straight up hard work and luck?

Maximus I agree with you. Some people, and it does not matter what sport or discipline it is, have a natural affinity to certain things and make it look sooo stylish and easy.

certain things come easier for different people. He's in a really good comfort zone with rails right now so the dude just went to work on it. A long time ago I recall not riding for like 2 months and hitting my first proper down rail at an office building, stuck it first try.. Some days you're just feeling it and can perform higher than normal. Grind more, build up your comfort(what I call 'rail balls') and shit just gets easier.

Honestly, I think its great that some people can just do whatever they want on a bike & those are usually the people that end up sponsored. But I am no pro. Never have been & more than likely never will be but i am content doing the few tricks i can do & now i will be riding pretty much Flatland all the time i KNOW its going drive me insane learning certain tricks & links but putting in hard work & slowly getting things done is more satisfying than just, oh yeah i'm gunna bar spin those stairs bam done. Wheres the excitement, the fear, the doubt that you might not do it & then the pure elation when you do! Its part of the Fun of BMX!

haha yeah, im comfortable on rails and all, i have never landed anything like that first try tho. This rail isnt mounted, it's portable, and slides around if you hit it in an odd way, and that can be a bitch. So i havent tried any tooth hangers, but he can get em first try dialed. If i went to a skatepark or somewhere with a mounted rail, I may be able to pull it. haha

I agree entirely. I got barspins easily and i got a lot of tricks to fakie before i got them good just straight up flat haha. I got my other friends on some tricks and they got me on others, like my one can do a nothing flat and i cant, i find it very difficult at the moment to get it in a good way. haha very good point!

Yeah, i feel that man, idk if i could just do flatland, i gotta get my dosage of air everyday. And i mean yeah, some seem to get things easy and do get sponsored, but not all, some do put in tons of work to get there. haha

I have a natural ability to ride i know cuz things do come easy to me but your mindset on the day makes such a difference, you gotta feel good on an off ya bike for things to come easy, also you just gotta ride a heap, that way you build momentum and confidence on a daily basis and eventually everything just lines up and makes sense, Clicks if ya know what I mean.

I think its got more to do with a persons desire and attitude to succeed, and what your willing to sacrifice than god given talent.

Have a look at the attributes of highly successful people, and you'll see that they have quite a few things in common.

Progression an success in any area of life depends on so many things all coming together to make it happen, its a wave and you gotta choose to either let it pass you by or ride that muva fuka till the end.

What really sucks is when you get into the flow then your bike breaks and you cant afford parts..... Always a blow to the flow.

What frustrates me is... I KNOW how to do the majority of the tricks i want to do, especially in Flatland, like i know the techniques i have the drive & passion to do it but when i come to doing it i end up on my ass!! I know that when you really want to do something not just in BMX in life you WILL get it done (Eventually lol)

This is the main reason why I have 3 bikes, you gotta at least have a back up bike, used to hate it when that happens its so depressing thers nuttin worse than wantin to ride but not bein able to.
