So I'm riding trails at the moment, I want to run 170mm cranks, which is slightly short but there's a few sprockets out there that are 26 or 27 tooth. So i'm currently running 175mm cranks, with a 25/9 gearing. Would a 26/9 gearing achieve the same speed when running 170mm cranks?

And if not, then what gearing would?

Changing sprockets doesn't affect crank feels? It only affects sprocket feels. Also changing cranks on affects crank feels. I'd say do what you want and don't get your individuality from some person on the internet. To answer 25/9 FEELS LIKE 25/9 ON ANY CRANK ARM LENGTH. THAT IS ALL THANK YOU

I went from 25t to 27t and could barely notice any difference. I've now gone up to 28t and wish I'd done so sooner. However, with a shorter crank arm maybe 27t would be about right

Crank lenght doesn't affect pedaling much, with shorter you have less leverage which theoricaly makes pedaling harder but I didin't notice any difference about pedaling force when I switched from 175 to 170.

Gear ratio matters alot tho, I personnaly hate the 25x9 gearing, I ride a 28x9 for street and everywhere.
On trails theorically, the bigger the better but once you are launched you shouldn't pedal and just pump for speed, same for bowl riding, so just go for a gearing you like.

25/9 = 2,77
28/9 = 3,1

These numbers aren't just random number indication which would mean the higher the number the harder it is to pedal, it's true but the real meaning is for one full crank your wheel will do 3,1 turn on a 28 vs 2,7 on a 25, it don't seem like much but if you already tried both you know there's a big difference between these two.

Thanks steve but cheifndaily, what i meant was speed not feel, just made that change

About speed a higher ratio is harder to launch but you'll be able to go way faster.

More speed more sprocket!! Trey Jones runs 32/9 just for the fastness. Smaller sprocket for acceleration and bigger for speed. 27/9 feels perfect but everyone has an opinion try em out for yourself. I commend you on the interesting theory my friend, I've never thought about it like you have. Let us know what you discover on your journey via this thread when you do figure it out

25 to 26 teeth shouldn't make a difference. i noticed when i went from 25/9 to 28/9, but I'm in love with it now a bit harder to get going but the top speed is higher

Honestly? Who gives a shit. Its the fucking internet. I hate all of you equally.
