I'm ordering a new sprocket either tonight or tomorrow but i'm stuck between the subrosa guard sprocket, animal m5, and the Tree OG. I haven't heard anything bad about Tree but I'm on the fence about getting a sprocket with a different tooth count. Does a different tooth count really change anything? Also i just wanted to hear what you've got to say about guard sprockets Photo

Subrosa for sure. 5 bolt holes, full guard with clearance for wider chains, and looks sick. Also diggin that escort mk1 in you profile pic

Seems pretty solid too. I'll be sure to post once I get it.

Bigger the tooth, higher the gear ratio. Higher the gear ratio, harder it is to pedal, but you also accelerate much faster and have a higher top speed. I would recommend 27-28t for a 9t driver if you currently run 25t. Alot of people enjoy 30/9 but i wouldn't recommend jumping straight to it. May be really hard to get used to.

I wouldn't get the Subrosa unless you hit your chain/sprocket frequently. Also, Tree makes a bashguard for their OG Sprocket, maybe worth looking at?

Best looking sprocket imo is the Backhand Bikes Forward, though its not available through mail order.

Ah that makes sense , I had a specialized with a 28T (I think). I was amazed at how fast I could go , since i'd only ever had walmart and target bikes before then haha. But yea, I bent my sprocket up trying to feeble..and I don't have much bike control since i'm just getting into grinds. I hop to the right (drive side) and manage to smack my chain or sprocket almost every time. I was honestly going to try and get my drive side flipped to the opposite side to see if I could avoid a damaged chain/sprocket while I'm still learning.

|

6/30/2014 11:02 AM

Out of those if go the OG tree with the extra guard. But if your grinding drive side get a s&m cymbol dsg and you'll be fine

30-9 is sweet

If you can afford a new rear hub, flipping your drive train would still be your best bet. I ran RHD and grind right, went through SOOO many sprockets this way. I tried using micro sprockets (22-23t) and still killed em. I never used a bashguard sprocket, BUT, i believe if you did, the guard would catch on double pegs and such while youre learning how to do them.
I finally switched to LHD and used a non-guard sprocket and it lasted me about a year, I rarely hit it. Usually only when I got into a feeble crooked and my rear peg slipped off.

If you plan to learn oppo grinds/crooks/crank arm grinds/sprocket stalls, then definitely go with the guarded sprocket. If not, and you can get a LHD hub in the near future, definitely get the Tree, and you can buy a separate bashguard for it later if you decide to learn those other grinds.

If your sprocket catches on dp's you'd have to have a low as fuck bb height.

Something with a bash guard until you can afford to switch your drive train for sure. And let's meet up later this week. I hurt my hand so I'm going easy for a few days.

On my 11.5" bb with 25t guardless, there was barely any room to spare. 26t would have hit no doubt. If youre running a 28-30t bashguard and grind inner peg, I believe you will rub with 11.7"-. Not like you cant learn how to avoid hitting, but still.

Yea, I was looking through danscomp and a custom wheel is definitely out of my price range right now, But by the end of summer I should be able to get a new hub. The realization that I bent my sprocket on a low ledge going super slow is making me kind of paranoid. I might run four pegs and try to get decent at opposites first to avoid running through sprockets

Just go with the guard sprocket then. Definitely switch to lhd when you get the chance though.

Incorrect^

With 3 cranks on 28/9 I get going faster than say 5 cranks on 25/9. My friend who runs 30/9 gives just a few cranks to flow around the park, where my 25/9 friends have to pedal their asses off into the park to do the same

This, for example 28/9 accelerates slower but gives you a higher top speed than 25/9.

Also, "Bigger the tooth, higher the gear ratio" is wrong. For example, I run a 30T sprocket but I could have the same ratio as someone with a 27T sprocket. Depends on the ratio, not number of teeth.

By bigger tooth count I meant with the same driver.

If a smaller ratio accelerates faster, then why does 1 crank of 28/9 result in me going faster than 1 crank of 25/9?

You're wrong, man. The bullshit I make up in my mind and spew out on the internet through my hairy ass is much more legitimate than what someone with years of product design and engineering experience says.
