Okay So Since I work at Walmart and I get the chance to call up the bike companies with questions and stuff whenever I want. I asked them about the top 3 bmx bikes at walmart, to get the full info on them. stuff that isnt really said on the stupid little fact card or in the website.
Now before buying a new bike from a dept store, or even a bikeshop, check out craigslist, I've seen allot of nice bikes on their that are hooked up, some of them only needing stuff like new tires, or a chain or just some tlc to get them going again for anywhere between 75-150...

As for walmart bikes.....
Frist off, the best of the 3 The Shawn White Thrash 3.5
price 230.00
Specs
I contacted the manufacture, and Confirmed that the hubs on this bike are sealed hubs, and headset, I did not receive any info about the bottom bracket though, chances are it might be sealed, if not, sealed bb kit and spindle is cheap enough. it has an integrated headset, and is drilled for gyro tabs.

next is the dk Dayton
199.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/20-DK-Dayton-Boys-BMX-Bike/17012260
Despite the picture, dk said when I called them that its a post production picture and that the bike has a standard headtube, unsealed fronthub, semi sealed rear hub, and a sealed bottom bracket.

the final bike is a Mongoose Mode 900
193-199
http://www.walmart.com/ip/20-Mongoose-Mode-900-Boys-Bike-Maroon/21577875
This bike does look like the best out of the 3 However, Mongoose confirms that all the bearings on this bike are unsealed which is kinda crap. despite it having double wall rims, and a half link chain, I personally think the bearings are more important.

and those are the top 3, other good entry level bikes are the mongoose 720, 540. and the Hyper SC1(if you can find it) DK Cleveland, Legend, and even the dk effect is decent.
(dk Cyngus from the dk website is also 279 at the moment. and I rate that above the thrash, a little bit goes a long way in dollars it looks like)

Bikes to stay FARRRR away from...Hyper Spinner, static, metro(static and metro are okay if your budget is that low) Mongoose Mode 90.100.180,270, and the LEAST worse of them all, The dk Bestwick, Dk effect,dk ratchet. and the Mongoose mode 360

Presonally i think this is a very smart thread.. My guess is that it will help alot of people starting out, especially young kids who cant convince thier parents to buy the bike from a bike shop, and dont know how to tell a good bike form a shit one. On a side note, why is that brand that is owned by a snowboarder/skater making the highest quality BMX bike that walmart carries!? I mean come on dk/mongoose.

Because Mongoose is owned by Pacific Cycles, who is onlyinterested in a good profit.
And because dk Is now owned by Huffy, Which has more say in what bikes are sold through the dept.stores, with the dk name then the people at Dk actually do.... (yeah its a sad thing i know)

THAT BEING SAID
a dk raven which is 250 right now would in my mind be level or slightly better then the thrash 3.5 but thats just my op...

MONEY. That is the reason we have this thread. Not everyone will shell out 300-500 bucks to TRY a sport.

One thing you guys could do who have more free time (I am actually working right meow) is find discounted and clearance parts to build budget custom setups and POST THEM IN ONE THREAD. That way people asking what they should get might have another option. We did this in the past and it was common to have a decked out setup for 500 bucks or so. And yes, I did state new riders won't always knock that much out, BUT some riders who are newer and have since destroyed a complete would benefit, as would those of you who like to have a second setup.

Do you have any details on the geometry of the Mode 900?

Full cromoly with mid bb and integrated headset for $200. Shit is a good deal for like younger kids who may or may not stick with it.

I agree with Thomas and Dave; his thread is simply to inform kids, or adults with zero money, about their best choices, from the most common place in the area, the big box store. I bought my own $300 complete, and being only 15, money is hard to come by with only Christmas or my birthday the only time for a bit of money. I almost wish I had found this thread when I was looking for a bike, I could have bought a cheap one, and put other money into upgrades.

at this price point, the frame geometry is going to be roughly the same between them all, But it should be the same geometry as a Mode 540, which is pretty common to find in the bigger walmarts, the 900 however is slightly harder to find, since its a "kids bike" for 200 bucks, they tend to be not so common in the stores.

The Geometry between the Dk bikes will be the same though, that I can give if needed, or anybody who has seen these bikes in the store, Just measure next time, and bring that info back. I would hate to see kids who TRULY want to get into bmx land themselves on a spinner or mode100 and then snap the headtube off on a bunny hop or some crap like that. only because they didn't know and where on a budget.
