Received a new backwheel a few days ago: a BSD Revolution hub, laced to a GSport Ribcage rim.
I've never ridden a freecoaster, and hated the slack when I tried it on other people's bikes.
Rode this wheel for the first time this morning, and I have to say I surprisingly enjoyed it so far. The slack is minimal, and I love the feeling of not having to care about backpedaling to disengage the wheel, it's always ready to fakie. The hub never engaged by accident or anything, really pleased with it for the moment.
I was scared running it would make me regress on certain things, mostly mentally, but I did everything I wanted in that session no problem, so I'm glad. Fakies with freecoasters are definitely weird though, I had a hard time rolling straight in that first session.
What surprises me is how silent the hub is. It has pawls that click like a normal cassette when rolling forward, but the sound is really really soft. I can barely hear the clicks when rolling. I actually like it, it basically makes no sound like a freecoaster yet still has really good engagement.
My other backwheel is a Profile Elite, so it will take me a while to get used to that BSD hub. They say the engagement is instant, but it's most definitely not when you're used to a profile hub. There's a good 1/8 crank of slack I would say, which is immensly better than a normal freecoaster, but still quite noticeable. I also have a hard time gauging my speed now, because I don't hear the driver's pitch going up or down anymore.
