I feel like every time I watch an edit that has a rider who is under 15 years old, all he does is ride park! That's cool in it's own way, I don't want to hate on park rats anymore than I already do, but what happened to youngins riding stuff besides park? Especially street! A lot of young people ride trails I guess but there are not many that ride ride street! My question is just why? Why aren't any of the younger riders riding street? I ride street! All of my friends ride street! Why are all of the kids riding nothing but park? I understand that maybe they just want to ride park but everyone is different and I feel like EVERY SINGLE edit that has a really young rider in it has ZERO street footage. All of the young riders that are sponsored can't ride just park! There's gotta be at least one little guy who is married to the streets! Where is he? Maybe I'm wrong and these kids do ride street and I just don't watch their street edits, I don't know but from what I've seen, all of the new generation of young riders are park rats.

That's weird. I'm seeing the opposite. Most younger riders around here are like "streeeeet, yeahhhhh. Park, gayyyy" I don't get it, why hate on riding park? I ride mostly street and it's awesome but I still love riding park.

Maybe because it's what they enjoy? Every so called 'park rat' I know doesn't hate street and street riders so I don't see why you feel the need to hate park and park riders. Isn't your profile picture on here a skatepark picture? Didn't you post a thread about how you didn't want your local park to close down a few days ago? Just ride what you want to ride and let other people ride what they want to ride.

I don't care at all for the hype. "ERMAHGERDD 10 YEAR OLD DOING BARS AND WHIPS!". okay. cool. Good for him. So he learned a trick at a younger age than most people? That doesn't make it insanely special in my eyes & call for everyone on the planet to metaphorically suck that kids dick just cause he can do them.

I made a confession bear meme similar to what I just said & sent that to bmxmemes & got tons of hate for it so I'm gonna expect the same here. I don't care. I stand by what I said. When a 10 year old starts flair whipping quarters & trucking 10 stairs, then come get me because that'd impress me cause that in my opinion takes WAY more balls than learning how to do a simple barspin on a bix jump.

I've sent too many memes in to them so idk if I can find it. But it was like "I don't care at all for these 10 year olds doing bars & whips in every line. It's just the same repetitive shit being done by pros now, only younger."

I then got a bunch of hate comments saying I'm stupid or "Ur just jelus u cant do tehm" which I can, and am not jealous at all actually haha.

For the record, I'm not knocking kids who can do them; that is to say I'm not gonna talk down to a kid doing that stuff and be like "You're a fag, that's gay." I just personally don't find it that special

99% of the edits I see in general are NOTHING but street.

The younger crowd probably starts with park because ramps throw you up higher than hopping, which makes tricks a tad easier to do. (Think flyout VS hop tricks).

Plus park is fun.

I mean the riders that are getting sponsored, getting put on flow teams, or even becoming pro that you see in videos or in contests and stuff like that.

I wasn't trying to hate on park at all! When I say the words 'park rat' I mean someone who rides park a lot or nothing but park, I don't mean for it to have a negative connotation. I wasn't trying to say that riding park isn't cool or anything but I do not see many young riders that can barspin or tailwhip and stuff like that doing tailwhips in the streets! They're all in bowls or over box jumps which is cool in it's own way but there has to be at least ONE really really young rider who is sponsored or on a flow team or even pro that loves to ride street. I have yet to see that!

I see what you mean now. I can think of two reasons:
Like Dave said, it's easier to start of learning tricks flyout etc.
Think of them as similar to young BMX racers. Young racers' parents will transport them all over the place to ride various races. It's the same with a lot off younger freestyle BMX riders. Their parents take them to different parks, and push them to learn new tricks.

I don't think I'm a thug but I like riding street. I also can't hit box jumps well at all! The parkest thing that I can do is 270 hips like in my profile picture and do tricks out of fly outs like tire grabs and baby tuck no handers and stuff. Other than that, I spend most of my time around the rails and ledges at skateparks.

the under 15 crowd prefers to ride parks because that is their version of the bar scene. They go there to meet up with their homies, and there is always a couple girls hanging around too. they do more chilling than riding sometimes

Grimaldo Duran's 14 year old son. Actually rides "street" and not "street skateparks" unlike 80% of people on this forum who say they ride street.

But yea, kids ride park cause mom and dad bring them there, parks are easier to learn tricks on too. Think of it this way, foot tall rail on a bank, or 3 foot tall handrail down hard stairs. For a new rider, which sounds safer/easier?

That's kinda how I look at it. Plus with my old age (haha) park hurts less to do things on.

But ...more

this. I always enjoyed park because it was easy to get to, easy to meet at, and easy to learn stuff on. plus sometimes street is just too far away, especially when you live in bodunk burbs and shit, stuff tends to be way too big or way too small in those settings outta the city

Street riding is more physically demanding than park riding, kids are not thats strong, riding park allows them to focus on technique rather than brute force.

For example compare the amount of physical energy you put in a fly out bar compared to the one you would put for a hop bar or a bar down something. Most kids don't have that sort of strength yet because well.. they're kids.

Still I've seen some edits where 14-15 year olds were completely destroying street and nowadays edits are mostly street anyways.

This. Plus every kid on here complains about having nothing to ride. I bet that factors in.

I'm young and I just don't have any concrete parks close to me. I like a lot of the street spots that are near me though.

The old generation of riders in the old days had it right , ride everything and not just stick to one discipline

|

6/16/2014 4:33 PM

As a part of the "New generation" I don't get why the older riders always embrace the stereotype of a the parkrat kid that complains he has nothing to ride. If you look and find there's a lot more kids that do ride street and make the best of street spots all around.
