You're still young so you only know some of what I'm talking about(no offense) but bmx is a revolving door it seems like. The same trends come and go basically swapping with each other. At least parts wise. But image wise bmx is going down the shitter. It seems our image has degraded to weed smoking and trying to have the best bike. If you wanna smoke weed that's your perogative, but don't make bmx look bad with it. Parents see that shit in edits and immediately want their kids as far from bmx as possible because it makes us look bad. Nothing against it, just shouldn't be part of the image. And I don't care how light or expensive your bike is, if you cant ride it(or try to for that matter) for shit then it isn't worth shit,

I agree man. I get exactly what you are saying and for the most part agree. I look at riding similarly to you man, it is a fun thing. I would love to believe i could get sponsored like some of these little douches. haha It is a nice thought, but i know it wouldnt happen unless i seriously became the most amazing rider ever. People just sponsor people they know really. Unless they are so crazy youd be an idiot not to haha. I can see about how weed has become very popular. I ignore it, i dont see BMX like that, but i get some do. Weed has been a growing culture since when it was found out. I have nothing against Pot, i think it is just fine. I dont do it. That is my choice. I know a lot of people that do. I get plenty high from riding my bike! I feel better and look better and everything! A substance can only make you happy for a while, but an achievement can make you happy forever. That is how i live. I think the Forum can be great in many many ways, i agree, people do get upset over stupid crap. I mean Jesus Christ! Literally! Lots of people got really mad over the religion thing. Which is nuts. This is a BMX Forum. That didnt belong here!! I think it is funny when i see people buy things for color. haha Although it is nice to have the option of a good looking bike that also works well, sometimes for the best quality you wont get the nicest color! haha Paint! haha riding has always been something fun and something to help me cope with my life in a constructive way and help me do something! BMX should never be considered something too serious in a sense that it has kind of become. It is something that should be pretty comical and kinda badass! BMX is probably the more hardcore freestyle sport. It is big, it is hard, it is very good. Weed on the other hand is something i am neutral towards. It isnt really badass. Its a mellow drug. It makes you feel good, and im all for people feeling good. But i dont think weed itself should have such a dangerous image as it does! People act like weed will ruin everything, which would be true if KIDS started doing it like they do. But in an adult, who can control their desires, they arent any more harmful than a beer. It doesnt belong in BMX, especially to be idolized! I dont get how people can ride a bike all mellowed out and numb, its a recipe for disaster!!

ruin you're whole summer came pretty close to that. utter utter shit. the music choice was appalling throughout, i understand it's easy to edit to it but at the end of the day since when did anything good come easy, look at anthem II, best video in years full of rock music, mulville's section gets me so pumped to ride and its memorable as well, the trap or hood rap needs to go, bmx has completely lost its grit and edge in the last few years, a few years back the likes of lacey and quite alot of the federal crew really had that, the rebellious edge to bmx has all but gone for the time being and that to me is whats sucking the fun out, the kids with the 'streets the best' shit has really done that unfortunately as now every 12 year old rider just want's to see Kerley do another skatepark line on a perfect setup, the constant drug use needs to go as well its just not cool to be showing it in every edit, its one thing when its a dude like colt fake but when its guys that younger kids re likely to idolize its just not on, the trend whoring needs to end as well its not helping at all

I absolutely agree. I love listening to rap when I ride. Gets me pumped and keeps my riding mood alive. But if your not Edwin, your edit should not have rap as the music track

I wish BMX could go back to when there was more variation in rider's styles and bikes, not like now when ~45% of the riders ride park and try to do the most amount amount of whips and bars in a 360, in to a footjam or a tyre tap and they all ride bikes with profiles and a scooter frame, all striving for the lightest bike, then there's another ~45% who just ride street and they all have 3/4 pegs, they're all brakeless, they all have fat seats, they all smoke weed, and they all just do manuals, nose manuals, smiths, 180s and bars. Then there is the other 10% which are proper riders, who ride how they want and set up there bike how they want.

|

8/13/2013 1:21 AM

adding to what i just said;
I think bmx is pretty much following society at this moment in time, everyone is just trying far to hard to be 'cool'. in bmx it's running 4 pegs and no brakes thinking you are chad kerley listening to 2 chains. In the rest of society you have the SWAG fags again blasting shitty rap as loud as they possibly can smoking weed going on about how street they are.
its all become very gimmicky and predictable, no one is willing to stand out and be a bit different and anyone who is gets a shit ton of hate (especially from the SWAG fag street kids(they are all posers as well))
In bmx the edits have also lost all grit that they used to have, the night filming and the general wayward attitude of the riders made it so much more entertaining, like watch WTP's ride to glory from 2009 compared to everything coming out now and there is such an obvious difference in the attitudes of the guys

|

8/13/2013 1:29 AM

I think what needs to leave BMX is people that hate so hard on kids that have just started and arent good. That is so annoying. Like really, if he just got his bike and has no clue, dont hate him for not knowing, just teach the poor kid! If the kid doesnt know not to snake people and keeps doing it, he doesnt mean to be rude! If he cant 360 something yet, leave him alone, he is learning, help him out! If you keep telling kids they are shit and all that, thatll just turn them into scooterers and no one needs that. haha just be friends for no other reason but you do the same thing together!! I know that people on here had to be at a point when they were learning! Just be understanding and helpful and thatll make more people want to ride! If a kid is doing something wrong dont be like, "oh shit man you are the biggest asshole ever why dont you go suck your moms dick because you are such a swagfag!!" That isnt cool! Just be like. "hey man, try this......... its the correct way!" educate the learners. Help them. Dont chew their balls off. I see that so much and it makes me sad.

ive been here since the beginning, along with the tcu forums. everythings gone to shit from people thinking theyre better than someone else. of course the shit talking only adds fuel to the fire. we all need to remember that at the end of the day we share a common passion. i remember when a rider would see one another on the streets and instantly become bestfriends, now half the time dudes dont even look the same direction, or are just dickheads. the bmx scene has been going to shit the past couple years, itll never die out but its def taken a shitty turn from what ive seen

If you don't like something in bmx or in life in general be the change you want to see, stand out from the crowd and be origional, stand up for what you believe in.

To be honest I don't think this is a bmx problem, its western society in general. The world has kind of gone to shit due to the way the media is constantly instigating hate, fear, ego and materialism.

Fuck em all & do your thing man, by the sounds of it tomdom, your already one step ahead by being aware of these things.

This lyric pretty much sums up western culture, bmx included...

"In the abundance of water the fool is thirsty"

I FUCKING BLAME OSS. thats what 'dem kids' think is cool so they watch that shit with its massive use of weed and shitty music and the parents see that shit and think that everyone in BMX is like that. imo OSS should have their pot supplier killed so they at least do less in vids.

I couldn't agree more. I may not make the change happen but ill be damned if I don't try. The point of this thread was to see how many other riders are striving to make bmx the best we can. And from what I've gathered so far riding isn't the only common interest. The guys that have posted in this thread so far are in my opinion the guys that are willing to deal with the ridicule and hate and willing to push through it to keep bmx the best they can. It may not mean much coming from me but you guys are true riders and bmx lovers. Together we CAN save bmx and we WILL.

This will probably be my last post on vital as i'm quitting as well as selling my bike, just coming back on here to view some old posts and threads i made, but anyway I'll answer your questions haha. These are my opinions by the way and aren't stating facts so don't get angry if you think i'm wrong.

What happened to them? - This generation is fucked, look at kids these days with iPhones, iPads etc, the other day i saw a kid no older than 12 smoking with his mates.

What happened to going on forums just to mess around and bullshit with riders all over the world? - Usually older riders get over riding and focus on other important things such as earning an income, think about it, you cant be into BMX until you're old and wrinkly unless you're Dave laurence wink haha. Therefore the interesting/fun people on the forum tend to leave and a new wave of kids join, it's like a never ending cycle, those kids will leave and then the next wave will come, however some older riders tend to stay but usually because they earn an income through the sport e.g. working at a bike shop / being professional. Even now, i hardly know any of these users however i do recognise some of the older ones.

Don't we all share a common passion for bmx? - I personally used to love bmx. Everyday i would ride, always be on bmx related websites and watch plenty of videos on youtube, however as time has passed, I've lost interest in the sport. Its equivalent to when you were a child, you would always play with toys but when you get older your interest changes which tends to make you focus on other things.

What happened to buying a part based on materials&specs rather than color? Don't know the answer to this, probably because of the personal preference of riders, as well as the cost of expensive parts.

What happened to being able to joke around? Seems like everyone gets butthurt now... - Forum users probably taking things being said on the internet too seriously, therefore being "butthurt".

What happened to accepting the advice you asked for? why ask if you wont listen... - Don't know the answer to this as i don't really know what's been going on in vital for the last few months

What happened to riding for fun? everyone seems to have an alterior motive...cool, make money, get famous? etc - Probably the younger kids watching too much tv or internet videos and seeing " cool" riders that influence them, also occurs with regular kids e.g Little Wayne song comes out, suddenly all these kids start saying "N**ga. or another example is "SWAG"....

Why is bmx frowned upon by so much of the world now? what damage could we possibly do?... - I don't know about anyone else but one of the main reasons i am quitting is due to seeing the attitudes of kids riding these days, a lot of them show no respect to anyone but themselves. It makes me feel ashamed to have the same interest as them.

Well anyway this is probably the last post you'll see from me. Hope these answer your questions haha

|

8/13/2013 6:49 AM

This thread is really good. And I agree lets make these into the good old days. If we start having a good attitude towards others in general then others are gonna start sharing that attitude as well.

|

8/13/2013 7:20 AM

@ trev

Sucks that your quitting due to other people's attitude problems, its sux I know but this is why I don't go to busy skateparks so I don't have to hear the bullshit, also I ride street alone pretty much all of the time. I have fun doing my thing and I ain't going to let a few dickheads spoil one of the things I'm most passionate about, no way no how.

Good luck for the future bro, I gotta say tho, if you ever were passionate about bmx your going to miss it. Fact.

People are lame these days. If it doesn't benefit then financially or socially they shut it out. These swag fags help keep our companies in business though. So I'll take it.

As for the bmx being frowned upon, we are a bunch of dudes a little different from the rest of society. None of us are normal. Plus we destroy everything we touch. Ledges, benches, rails, and anything we think we could get a clip on. We jump off people's roofs, that's a huge insurance claim if we get hurt.

I hate when people ask you how come you don't ride brakless or like how come you have fat tires that adds weight and shit like that. And i just tell them that its the way i ride. And that kid that asked me that rides scooters and fixes now cuz he said its too hard to land anything on a BMX lol. Theres a reason its called freestyle people should stop copying trends and peoples riding styles and find there own that's what BMX is about.

I agree with Trev. The things that really annoy me:

Spoiled ass kids, I honestly can't stand kids now that are 11-15 they're fucking annoying. Of course there's some exceptions I know some guys on the forums are younger and they're cool but around here is the same 14 year old swagfag talking shit with their iphone 5s gay swag gear and their shit bikes. And their fucking instagram shit.

Kids who pay too much attention to pros, sure watching other people ride bikes is okay I guess, I don't really do it but when kids copy their favorite pros, shoes, pants, underwear, hairstyle, bike, and start smoking because they do. If you can't make your own decisions you don't need to be on the internet.

OSS/Tcu sorry it's not my thing. Being "ghetto" is not cool not sure why everyone thinks it is. The shitty ass fucking rap music. Rap sucks as it is but when you play even shittier rap like Little wayne it's worse. But fuck I tried to watch ruin your whole summer because zach was in it and I knew hes an admin here lol and I couldn't stand the fucking music and weed constantly. And what the fuck kind of name is "on some shit"??

Kids who play B.I.K.E. seriously you're fucking gay. The vital games of bike are okay because it's cool to see other members ride but when kids ask to play bike, fuck off.

Kids who talk shit about other bikes when theirs sucks. I saw two kids talking shit and he had a fucking stock dk frame.

People who try to buy/sell for stupid fucking prices. No one cares if you bought your wheels for 500 dollars nobody is paying fucking 400 for them used. If you want near new prices ya better have the fucking warranty card/and it should be in the original box And when people offer you ridiculously low prices or stupid shit.

As you can tell I don't ride with many people because they piss me off.

I tried to watch a movie with my daughter one day. I in no way shelter her but the music was just horrible. You have kids watching a lot of these movies getting inspiration much like most of us did when we were younger. I rode quite a bit back in the day but recently just started back up. Some younger guys like to talk crap about my bike but it is whatever. I like triple wall rims, Fat heavy stems, 14mm forks, and old school tires. I might even raise my seat up if I want. And if you ride brakes then good for you. I personally don't give a shit what people are doing but yeah it is not good for the sport. It is not at all what it used to be. I remember crazy looking bikes and people just having fun. That's the image I wish to put off to younger riders. Life has enough negativity as it is. I am starting to come around to newer parts but when I see an old GT, Mongoose, or a Haro, I feel just like a kid again. Where all that mattered was setting up the biggest ramp and seeing what kid had the guts to launch himself off it. Ha.
