My advice would be to try and get as much of the frame made of CroMo as fits within your budget and try to make sure that at least the back rim is a double wall rim if not both rims. It really all ends up being about what you can pay. I always suggest the Kink Whip (it is full CroMo frame and has double wall rear tires) as a nice place to start but there are other brands and deals to be had at similar prices if you do your homework. The Whip can be had at both Albe's and Danscomp for $355 right now.

Who cares, it would be better just to get a more expensive bike like a fit/wtp/Sunday if he can afford it, and the distributors only get bikes if there is a high demand for them

For a complete you can also check out the Stolen Sinner XLT. Full heat-treated chromoly frame, cranks and bars, sealed hubs front+rear, double-wall rims, chromoly forks.

|

2/25/2013 9:59 AM

the main points here are what chukt and sketchy travis said..

- as close to full cromo frame/fork as you can afford
- as many sealed bearing components as you can afford

but i would make one addition to that which i would actually place just slightly more important than these two and that is the geometry, make sure you get a bike that you feel comfortable on as this will affect your learning curve if the bike is super long or super short compared to your build. you can usually dial this in just looking at the top tube, HT angle and chainstay length measurements. you should educate yourself on whats "average" tt length for you so you know it fits and know how the CS and HT affects the bikes handling.. then try to get one with the most cromo and sealed bearings as possible. pay no regard to year under any circumstances and pay no regard to brand unless you need a handy tie breaker.

it would depend on your level of interest/commitment, if you know you are going to stick with than by all means get the best complete you can from the get-go.

which are you looking at now?

reason 2013

|

2/26/2013 2:02 PM

If you can order from dans id use a coupon code and get the 2012 stolen score or 2013 subrosa malum since they are both in that budget and better than the reason

Reasons not to get the reason for $500
- not full cromo and for 500 you can get that
- not double wall front rim and for 500 you can get that

The score would be my top choice because its full cromo, double walled both rims and $110 cheaper
The malum would be my second choice because it comes with a lot of parts people upgrade to anyway like the The Shadow Conspiracy stem, seat combo and interlock chain. This is actially slightly better than the score but i wouldnt spend the extra 110 for it if you didnt have to.

Dont forget you danscomp codes
