...about having NOTHING to ride, try doing this.

The guy built a kicker and rode a bunch of random stuff on a farm. Sure there are old ramps etc there, but look at what he did with a few boards or a kicker. Solid stuff.

I think it'd be fair to point out he's rather skilled though. For people like me who are lower intermediate riders this kind of thing isn't all that feasible.

|

11/29/2014 5:48 AM

That to me is a cop out. I STARTED on a farm doing this kind of stuff, riding everything (even flatland on gravel), hauling a kicker around and eventually took over a section and built some dirt jumps, and in no way was I at this guys level. I wouldn't even say I am now after 15 years. Sure you might not boost a kicker and wallride a 6 foot tall thing, but you can still do this kind of stuff. Skills are irrelevant when it comes to fun.

The whole point is those complaining of nowhere to ride could EASILY build a kicker or a rail or box or even ride some trash wood and drastically change their predicament. In no way am I saying you need to mimic this guy completely, but be creative and build something and the fun will follow.

I suppose lol. Back when I first started skateboarding, I lived out in the country and was rarely able to go to the skatepark in town. So for a quarter pipe a took a flat piece of plywood, hooked a few straps on it and stuck it in my creek for almost 3 weeks, slightly tightening the straps daily so it would bow and stay.

Just to point out I'm a failed skateboarder but still do a lot of skating on the side lol. My main interest is in bmx these days.

Maybe we don't have money/wood/skills to make a ramp.
It's mostly the snow that prevents me from riding.

Money/Wood/Skill to me can be changed. Shovel snow, rake leaves, do odd jobs. Ask for scraps from construction companies, I bet a lot would give them for free so they don't fill their dumpster as fast.

Hell, grab a shovel and build dirt bumps all over.

If you saw the ramps and stuff I built out of scrap wood I FOUND back in the day you would be blown away at how haggard they were haha, nails everywhere, wobbly...made from junk wood, but I shredded them all day every day.

And you don't necessarily need anything more than a scrap piece of ply, or a 4 inch chunk of 2X4 for a bump jump.

The point is you can have literally nothing to ride and whine all day, or you can do something about it, and MAKE a spot. Look at things differently. Who of any of us would look at some of those things and say "I wanna ride that"? Probably none.
Some of my funnest sessions were on a dirt bump that was 5 inches tall in my mom's driveway, or on a concrete chunk I found, hell even CURBS. Try riding flatland, and learning hang 5s or whiplashes or learn to hop into a hitchhiker.

Completely true, if you want to ride, you don't go looking for excuses, you look for solutions.

I mean i don't have a LOT to ride, but i make things and ride odd set ups, and stuff im definitely not supposed to ride. haha Some kids i know really are fucked when it comes to riding spots and room. I mean this one kid doesn't even have a strip of concrete or gravel to ride, and not much of a yard either. He lives way out there too. But he still gets rides to places to ride and such.

I had some friends on a farm that took a bulldozer and bulldozed a small set of trails in their yard!! We went crazy too. The jumps are no longer there, but nonetheless they were fun and creative. Made a big roller and 2 doubles and a flyout. Probably the most fun thing i rode ever.

this. im essentially homeless. (living in a cousins spare room for now)
paying for school, a car, food, living. other stuff.

so even if I had space to build stuff. I wouldn't have money. and vice versa.

when It comes to dirt jumps. oh yes. I love meeting the new local police officers.

same with quick creteing... that's was a great way to get in touch with them police.

that being said, I ride what I can when I ride. doesn't mean it doesn't suck. I could wish for something more, while still riding what I got.

Been there. 2 jobs, paying for school, a new car at the time, my BMX habit, living at home. I was dumb with money back then so I got myself into a shitty situation, but I still managed.

I'm not looking for reasons or excuses or whatever, the whole point is that no matter how bad you think your situation is with riding obstacles, you can make it better pretty easily, with even some scraps. A phone call to a construction company asking for scrap is not hard to come by. Craigslist ads for stuff too. You would be surprised what people will give away.

Trails, don't build em in open areas in town, we had a set illegally built that lasted 5 years before they plowed em, fully know by everyone due to a few dipshit kids.

Quickcrete, do it late at night. I know someone who does it at two am or so periodically, to not be caught. And it is dump, shape and leave to let it dry.

Again, not looking for everyone to post their reasons or excuses. The point is to show that even just looking at something differently can mean a HUGE difference.

I don't live at home. I don't have a home.

im crashing in my cousins extra room, for now. lol

I have no where to build stuff.

and trails. they've all gotten torn down cept one set and its meh. too fucked to maintain because some of the animals that are back there.

and one that are like ancient. and yet again the animals

and yeah, I know how to quickcrete breh lol

idk im not really putting excuses. im just saying. shit happens and it aint always as easy as you think. you were just more fortunate.

like Im crashing at my cousins now. but I wasn't even there for a while. you cant exactly bring a bike with you when your sleeping in parks and bridges and shit hahaha

and like I said in muh other post. ill ride whatever I can get or whatever there is. its just kinda lame when theres not much and you get burned out... there was kindof a witchhunt for riders where I live. so there wasn't much you could do diy

this is the type of stuff i could watch over and over. self-made spots, no fashion, no stupid ass clips of being an asshole in public, just riding what you have at your disposal, not only that, the dude kills it 100%, plus a pink floyd song? pretty awesome.

ohh wait, no barspins? i take it back. video sucks.

This is pretty flawed if you're under the age of 18 like myself. West Virginia is nothing but hill and shitty concrete so that makes it harder. I can't ride at my house because we have no concrete, it's hilly, mom won't let me put ramps in the yard. and dad won't let me dig dirt jumps.

I still ride a ton, just not at my own house.

I rode flatland on gravel for my first year, and that's about it. Or and I rode off the bumps in my yard. Occasionally I would ride down the shoulder of the highway to the nearest town to ride a parking lot.

I don't think age has anything to do with it.

Every time I post anything like this, kids try to poke flaws that only really involve themselves, or excuses.

AGAIN, the point is that no matter how bad your situation is, you can change how you look at things and you can do things to improve them.

I was fortunate in the sense that I got to build things over time, and we had some land, BUT I know people who have tiny yards, no space, and they found room for a grind box. A 2 foot wide, 2 foot tall 8 foot long grind box. Also a rail.

A dude I know lives in a townhome with his parents. He built a rail in a welding class that he can stash in a garage easily out of the way. He just turned 18 a few weeks back.

If you had ever even walked in this driveway, you would know that the gravel is incapable of being ridden in. There goes flatland outdoors. I can't hop really high in my garage or I will hit my head so I do flatland in there occasionally.

To ride to the nearest town would be at least five miles on a highway with nothing but hills, I am brakeless and have 28/9 as my gear ratio. Plus, my parents will not allow me to ride my bike to the nearest town anyway.

Without a ride somewhere, I cannot have a GOOD session. I still ride a lot but I can't do what other individuals do at their own houses.

Fuck em. How will they know where you went. We used to ride miles to get to buses to sit on them for hours to get to other cities like Seattle. I rode 30 miles on my 25/9 home from Seattle at like 10 pm and didn't get home till like 6 in the morning. Would crash for a couple hours, then get up and ride 30 miles in the other direction.

I got into BMX cause I loved to explore and have the freedom to go where I wanted, tricks followed and now its even better. But my point is just go out and explore. It's one of the best things about having a bike. You can go wherever you want.

I ride A TON. I wasn't trying to complain about the amount of time that I have on my bike. I just can't ride at my house.

There is no public transportation around here and my folks definitely wouldn't allow me to ride down to the local town and I am not defiant enough (yet) to just do it.

Gravel is gravel. Unless you are on slate shards, I'd bet you could ride it. The stuff I was on had sections that were basically 3 inches of sand. Still rode it. Rode flat in the garage in the winter, or in one of the gravel floor sheds to dodge wind. Even rode in my basement with a 7 foot ceiling.

I don't need to see excuses, you can ALWAYS improve your situation. ALWAYS.

28X9 doesn't matter, it means faster top ends, and slightly slower acceleration. How does a lack of brakes have an adverse affect over riding up or down hills?

Again, YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR SITUATION AT HOME OR ANYWHERE, many times it just takes a different look at something.

I was amazed when I saw this the other day online. But if kids on here are little bitches and making up excuses not to ride thats their own business. I dedicate pretty much 100% of my time to bmx. If I'm not digging im riding, not riding im working on my bike, not tinkin on my bike, im thinking about bmx lol.

Most kids now don't want to build their own stuff because it takes time and hard work, they rather go ride street or someone else's park. They won't ever get that awesome feeling of building something and then riding it and its completely rad. Today's generation man...
