48h is going to be the "new" thing that every little mouth breather will think they need. Just like the kids who go out and buy every oil slick part, gum tires, and a freecoaster just because.

I'd bet money half the people who ride or think they need to ride 48h wheels, do not. I trash my rear wheel and considered going to a 48h again before, but truing it up every month or so isn't that big a hassle for me. Although there are days where I beat the literal fuck out of my rear wheel & it gets out of true like a week or 2 after I just trued it.

I only run 48h because I hate truing wheels and I suck at it.

And I don't think 48h going to be a trend really. Its too damn heavy for kids

yeah i mean, as far as "needing" a 48, thats up for debate by all means. unless people are dropping roofs multiple times a day, along with huge stairsets and bangers, most will get by with 36 just fine. as mentioned above though, i love the idea of rarely having to true wheels. i hate bringing my wheels somewhere, having to wait for a call or an email when theyre done, having to drive all over the place etc. id do it myself, but spending a huge amount on a truing stand sucks too. wheels are by far my biggest aggravation.

i personally wont switch to 48 simply because the thought of doing a wheel change is not something id look forward to. plus no 48 ratchets around, im all set. now, im by no means a gsport dick rider, but the ratchet is the most simple to work on, heavy as fuck, solid hub ive ever used, so that would be the only draw for me to switch up.

and as far as a new 48 freecoaster.....can vital threads handle that kind of traffic lol?

true, 3-4 more ounces more per wheel will turn kids away from it instantly haha.

48h wheels are easier to true too, I think so anyway. 36h isn't too bad, but when you're doing it often it can get a bit tedious

The way I see it, there's no reason to not want 48s. A set of 48s with double butted spokes will be around the same weight as a set of 36 spoke wheels with straight gauge spokes and incredibly more durable. The only downside is it's currently harder to find and will cost more initially.

I have had 48 hole wheels on my diamondback I bought around 10 years ago and I have never touched them. Not the spokes bearings or cassete. They are alex rims and odyssey hubs. I absolutely love them. Although I probably don't put as many miles on my bike as alot of you guys but it has been used and abused on the trails street and downhill trail riding on public hiking trails. Although the front axle is 14mm and I have had a hard time finding a fork for 14mm I was considering getting different 48h hubs to get a new fork. I switched all the parts off the diamondback and put them on a 2014 colony frame. Love it. Anyway 48h or bust

I saw a 14mm odyssey forks in the buysell section a while back. Maybe it is still available

|

10/12/2014 12:23 PM

I still run 14mm Odyssey Dirt forks and 48h Odyssey wheels. May be willing to part with the forks if the price is right as I've been wanting to get something tapered

Honestly I think it's kind of overkill nowadays, wheels have got so much stronger over the years and 99% of people don't need 48 hole wheels.a well trued 36 is more than enough for pretty much anyone (unless you ride for bonedeth that is) Also it's pretty much guaranteed that almost everyone who would buy them spends the whole time on foot high flat rails and thinks 4 foot is a big drop.

True, but there's still the fact that 48s require less truing and less chance of failure at little to no increase in weight depending on spokes. It's like saying most people don't need chromoly frames when hi-ten frames will hold up for a lot of people. There's many benefits and almost no downsides outside of cost.

Nah guys, remember when Bone Deth first announced the Porn Hubs and everyone went through the "Heavy is better" phase? Dudes going around bragging that they had 30 pound bikes, and just assuming since a frame was heavier it was stronger? Heavy can be cool.
