Looking to buy a rear Tree hub and ribcage, but am in a predicament
The frame I have now has a 14 mm axle, but in the future, i'm looking to buy a frame with a 3/8 size axle. Is running a 3/8 axle with 14 mm adapters a sense-able option?

36h
RHD or LHD (black or silver only)
requires straight pull spokes (sold separately)
17mm female heat-treated steel axle with 3/8" square head bolts
unique bearing system eliminates loose/tight bearing illness
ceramic driver bearing
hubguard included

On Empire, it lists that it has a 17mm axle with 3/8 bolt heads. So i'm guessing it goes on a 3/8 axle?
Finally, I want it in silver, but i'm not sure if silver means raw, silver paint or if it's polished

That one would be 14mm. The 3/8" refers to the size of the ratchet used on the bolts. The silver is a polished raw. Not super high polish, but enough to shine.

Well that's not as clear as it could be... Guess i'll have to shimmy over to Dans
You think running a 3/8 female rear hub on a 14mm axle w/ adapters is sustainable for a few months?

Its a true 14mm female thing. Not a 3/8s axle. although they do make those, this hub is not that.

Why do you want 3/8"? When it comes to the tree hubs, the 3/8" and 14mm versions aren't noticeably different in weight. In fact i.think the 3/8" is heavier because it uses chromoly bolts and.the 14mm uses aluminum.

My back wheel isn't doing too hot, if I get a new one I would need a 14mm axle
I'm going to buy a frame that has a 3/8 axle hopefully sometime in the near future, so I don't want to buy a hub with a 14mm, then buy a whole new one 4 months later. I also don't have money to buy a $370 frame and a $300 wheel at the same time.

Ah Alright. Well, 3/8" with adapters is just as strong as 3/8" in a 3/8" dropout. So you shouldnt have any problem until you get your new frame.

The 14mm bolts are chromoly but you can buy the aluminum ones . The 14mm aluminum are well strong enough for heavy peg use, Ive run them for a few years now with no problems.

Yes, 3/8 bolts with adapters will be fine? I run profile 3/8 in back with pegs and have never had a problem so asking if the Tree hubs will be fine, ABSOLUTELY!

This. The 14mm bolts are chromoly, not aluminum. And 3/8" will be fine in the rear, especially if you don't run pegs.

I'm not buying it because it has a 3/8 dropout, it's just a trail frame that happens to have a 3/8 dropout
lol

Where was it purchased from? Mine was definitely chromo and I switched it out. I even talked with Sam before so and he told me there were no problems with anyone on the team running them with pegs also.

You'll be fine especially being pegless. I run pegs with adapters on my 3/8" bolt G-sport ratchet hub on a frame with 14mm slots.

Birdcages are strong enough for 97% of people, and they're light which feels awesome, plus they're a bit cheaper than Ribcages.

|

1/9/2015 8:09 PM

I weigh 220 lbs, have a ratchet to birdcage with the 3/8 kit in it. I occasionally run pegs and have never had an issue. I have a custom frame with 3/8 dropouts and my current frame with 14mm dropouts, which I use adapters with obviously. also never had issues as far as my dropouts go. my only issue with my rear wheel is that I wish I had gotten a rollcage or ribcage. my birdcage comes untrue pretty often but that's mostly due to my weight and riding style. a lighter and more smooth rider would probably be fine with a birdcage.

I'd say if you're a lightweight guy who isn't sloppy birdcages will last. Rollcages are bombproof , you can get away with Birdcages
