Nowadays it seems that everybody's got to have the most popular parts. This is a post for all you people who want all the stuff that's trendy.

Here is a list of stuff I've noticed going on.

Raw frames
Integrated headsets
Tallest bars you can get your hands on
Flangless grips
Pivotal seats slammed as low as they go
25/9 micro drive gearing
Half link chains
iPhone 5s and 5c's
The fattest whitewalls you can find
Plastic pegs
Plastic pedals
No brakes
Hub guards(even if you don't have pegs!)
Chrome parts
Loud cassette hubs
Freecoaster hubs

So there you go. if you wanna be trendy and popular, this is the way to go.

And go ahead and get streamers on your barends just for the hell of it.

You know what I hate? People that say lololololololololololololol. Shut up!!!

How are hub guards trendy? I wasn't aware not wanting to break spokes & not fucking your hub up was a trend

We've moved on from a lot of these "trends," and even then, a lot of your "trends" are something that are actually useful and worth running. People run them because there's a point. For example, you say integrated headsets are a trend... yeah, only for like 8 years, because they're easier to work with and tend to be more durable, plus they look cleaner.

A lot of what you mentioned is either progression as far as parts go,more personal preference.and since it is PERSONAL preference, not everybody does it

Raw frames - Absolutely, but - its about offering more to a saturated market of colours.
Integrated headsets - been around a long time, the alternative aint pretty.
Tallest bars you can get your hands on - only if you're tall enough to ride em, otherwise it affects technique
Flangless grips - trend, or progression?
Pivotal seats slammed as low as they go - I went from an S&M Long johnson cranked high, to a mankind stump seat pole...why? because these bikes aint for sitting, the geometry just doesnt work...
25/9 micro drive gearing - again, the alternative is big ass sprockets embedded in calf muscles like 1995
Half link chains - trend, or technological improvement?
iPhone 5s and 5c's - agreed.
The fattest whitewalls you can find - havent seen too much of this yet.
Plastic pegs - an alternative to metal?, to help prevent willful destruction of property, as opposed to trend?
Plastic pedals - this is just for lady boys who arent up for metal pedals yet.
No brakes - theres something to be said for brakeless, i dont think its a trend, because it helps technique
Hub guards(even if you don't have pegs!) - havent seen this.
Chrome parts - again.....1995
Loud cassette hubs - possibly...
Freecoaster hubs - Fakies, or the ability to do so arent a trend, as much as a progressive ability.

Raw frames- Might be a trend, but not really. some people just like the clean look & don't like any 1 specific color for their frame.
Integrated headsets- How is this even a trend? Integrated headsets are the standard for today & much more simple than standard headsets are, not to mention they are all sealed bearings & the cups are built into the frame to make things even easier
Tallest bars you can get your hands on- Preference, not a trend. A lot of people find it easier on their backs, and the width to help give them better leverage. I personally hate too tall of bars, my 8.66" bars are enough for me & that's really pushing it. I like lower bars, which is why I have my stem slammed so compensate. and they're cut down to be more narrow, I just like the upsweep.
Flangless grips- again, preference. A LOT of people I know ride with their hand along the flange & it rubs their hands & hurts after awhile, so they cut it off. I don't run my hands there, but I have my flanges cut cause I hate the look & sometimes I land on the flange area when doing barspins & I don't like how that feels.
Pivotal seats slammed as low as they go- this WAS a trend, I'll give you that. But I know a lot of people never did it just for it being a trend, like myself. I had mine raised up some, but sometimes when I'd bunnyhop really high I'd end up nutting myself with the seat somehow haha. so I lowered it. Not completely slammed, but really close.
25/9 micro drive gearing- again this is a bit of the norm nowadays like integrated headsets are. 25/9 is the standard nowadays. Plus most frames cannot even accommodate larger sprockets due to the chainstay being in the way now. 25/9 is also lighter, more out of the way, weighs less, and is essentially stronger since it's less likely to be hit & if it does get hit, it won't bend as easy since it's smaller. Also 44/16 =25/9 pretty much, so it's the same feel too.
Half link chains- This could be a trend, I know tons of people getting them just because they want a half link. no argument as to why. So This I will give you, although I will state they are stronger when it comes to being slammed against a ledge/rail when messing a grind up, over a full link.
iPhone 5s and 5c's- How is this a trend? I only know 1 person with a 5c so far, maybe they like the phone? I have an iPhone 5 not because it's trendy or the in thing, but I like the interface & camera.
The fattest whitewalls you can find- This is a trend, fat tires are pretty trendy. I have one in the front though just because I like the feel and it feels easier to do footjam tricks.
Plastic pegs- Somewhat of a trend, but also for people too lazy to wax a ledge or go faster. More of a laziness thing, or to be allowed in a skate park that doesn't allow metal pegs. Only way I'd ever ride pc pegs is for late night sessions when I wanna grind stuff but it's too loud, other than that, it's 100% steel for me.
Plastic pedals- Not really a trend, a lot of people like myself like the not locked in feeling it gives you. I hate feeling too locked in to my pedals, I like being able to move around slightly when needed.
No brakes- Trend maybe years ago, I used to ride brakes but never took them off because of it being a trend, even though people around me were. So you do have this correct. I'd probably run brakes now if the lever wasn't in the way, always knicked my knuckles on it. plus I hate barspins with a lever.
Hub guards(even if you don't have pegs!)- Not a trend at all. They protect your hub/spokes. people who don't have pegs and have guards, I'm guessing you never heard of pegless grinds.
Chrome parts- Somewhat of a trend to be honest in my opinion
Loud cassette hubs- this was a big trend years ago, seems to be dying down some slightly. I'm guilty of this, but I just liked the sound it made. That deep, clicking noise just seemed cool years ago haha. If anything, taking the grease out of your hub to make it louder was a bigger trend.
Freecoaster hubs- now THIS is a trend, and every company making a freecoaster that's just a re-branded KHE, minus a few. There's people who legit want the coaster for tricks they can do, then there's people who just don't want to back pedal, or just want to try it out because everyone else is (like the pros)

Most are functional and other are personal preference. Whats the big deal? Your bike looks to be 5 different colors with bright colors. After taking a 4 year break I have noticed all these crazy colors and color schemes. I'm not going to bitch about it because to me bmx has always been an individualistic thing to do. When you worry about other people then you're doing the sport wrong.

Integrated headsets isn't really a trend, they are a better headset and easier to use, and have become an industry standard.

Tall bars come in and out, so they are trendy.

Flangless grips come in and out.

Picotal seats are more user friendly, and becoming a lighter option and standard, slammed is trendy but that seems to be fading.

Small gearing is industry standard in freestyle, as it is lighter and out of the way.

Half links are typically more adjustable for the micro drive stuff

Iphones, well, those are stupid.

Fat tires are popular, they absorb shock better than skinnies, white walls look cool.

Plastic pegs minimize damage and sound when grinding, also lighter.

Plastice pedals hurt a bit less, are cheaper and lighter.

No brakes has been in and out, it was BIG in the early 00's, faded and came back.

Hub guards, people take pegs off and on, do you expect them to pull hub guards too?

Chrome is timeless. It has been less popular, but it was never totally gone.

Loud cassettes, well that is because kids are stupid and like loud noises. Maybe it sounds like the crap choice in music these days?

Freecoasters, those have been around for like 35 years in different forms, but they are finally being engineered to handle street abuse. Honestly I think because there are more options they seem more "trendy" or popular.

Not trying to be a dick, but this is how I see things. I have noticed a lot of threads about "trends" and such.

Who cares about trends, just set up your bike how you want and don't care what other people do.

Besides I only have one of those things, which is the Integrated Headset which is hardly a trend. And I have 28/9 which I suppose is micro-drive too.

Ok. I guess "trend" isn't the best word for it. This is just a list of stuff that I think a lot of people are doing. I know that most of this stuff is progressive. I got a standard headset, bars with 7.75" rise, a full link chain, a Samsung, 2.30" tan walls, and a decently quiet hub. I don't like brakes, and yes, I have seen riders with hub guards and no pegs.

Trends are the general course or prevailing tendency. You guys are confusing "trend" with "fad" which are temporary.

I feel like bigger drive trains like 28t and 30t are coming back. Also I've gotta disagree with your slammed seatpost point. Maybe it's just in California, but the slammed seatpost trend is dying... replacing it is the 3-6 inches of seatpost trend...

Also, having crazy socks and rolling up your pants to constantly show them is a huge trend.

Not sure who would run a hub guard with no pegs, definitely not trendy though, just dumb.

|

1/8/2014 12:48 PM

I've seen riders with hub guards on both sides and no pegs. Makes no sense to me.

I'm thinking the "no pegs with hub guards" thing may be because they needed to take them off, but didn't want to take the guards off too. I dunno. It's not my business.
