Unique sounding cassettes?

I’m thinking about getting a new wheel built up and am kind of after something with a different sound. I currently run a BSD Street hub and it kind of has a generic in the middle sound. What are some cool options for a unique sounding cassette? And I realize how a hub functions is was more practical then the sound. I am just after something new so please bear with the dumb question.

Fly Magneto and Eclat Seismic hubs sound awesome. Completely different style of engagement over tradition cassettes with pawls.

Tall Order Drone, Merritt Nonstop, Shadow Definitive, Relic, Colony Wasp, and Profile Elite all offer a lot of engagement with a really zippy/buzzing sound. BSD Swerve hubs operate on the same principle but I heard one in person and it was actually really quiet and subtle. Same with a Demolition Whistler, very quiet for how much engagement is in that hub.

Premium Stinger hubs had a crazy sound but they aren't available any more.....and they weren't too reliable or durable.

What about primo hubs? I’m kind of after that aggressive pawl sound. Just bored with running the same old setup and I’m not getting out much recently. Gotta stoke the fire.

I think it depends which one you get. Some Primo cassettes are exactly like the Colony Wasp. 6 Pawls, 3 teeth on each pawl. I have a Colony Wasp and it's pretty loud. I also run the pawls dry to make it louder. Pretty sure there are YouTube videos where people feature hub sounds. Might be worth doing a little more research on your own.

Yep the latest PRIMO HD (Hobie Doan) rear hub features 6 pawls, similar to the Colony Wasp.
The PRIMO Balance has like 3 pawls, but with the same "3 teeth" design.

Note that some brands put some grease onto the pawls, which reduce the sound...sometime the pawls also get sticked inward and don't engage properly. Don't use grease in there...

Yes they do. More of a "buzz" than a BMX style "clack clack clack". I bet the new Fly magnetic hub sounds similar to a King. They both use a grooved ring interface.

So I checked out a few YouTube reviews. For the price tag and the abuse I put on my bike I think the primo remix will be perfect. The profile elite sounds awesome but I can’t warrant spending that much right now. In my opinion they don’t sound terribly different, I just want a more aggressive sounding hub than what I currently run. Pretty stoked for some new parts.

having heard both in person, the King is a much higher pitch. Like if you pull up a zipper really quick on a jacket, that's how King hubs sound to me. Oddly enough, those Magneto hubs sound a bit more like a traditional cassette than you expect, less buzzy but still really aggressive.

You can see there are far fewer points of contact in the Fly hub. Teeth seem to be a lot more coarse.

I’ve had a magneto for about a year and a half and I like the sound. This is a clip from the bowl last week for a sample

I think that hub is probably the most innovative bmx product in the last 10 years. It just makes a ton of sense.

I've had the Remix, it sounds very, very similar to the Profile Mini, just a tad quieter. I've also had a hub made by Mutant Bikes called the Owl, I'd place it between the Tall Order Drone, and the Colony Wasp. It's got the same rate of clicks as the Wasp, but with the volume of the Drone.

That tech has been around for years and years in road bikes a MTBs. Fly uses magnets to keep the hub engaged while Eclat uses springs for their hub. However I can't say if magnets were used in hubs from other nonBMX companies.

It's basically a King ring drive with a magnet. The magnet is the unique part.
