WINSTANLEYS BMX PROBLEM

So I wanted to get back riding, and saw the wtb envy on winstanleys bmx website, with 20% off so I thought that I might as well get it.

So spent all my tax rebate money on the bike. When it arrived everything was fine on it.. Apart from the stem. It's an ÉCLAT fist stem, and when I tried it, the top hex bolts would bite in, but the bottom ones wouldn't even line up to the stem so I couldn't even screw them in, without it crossthreading.

I took it to a bike specialist that said it's either the front plate of the stem is the wrong one... Or it's been cut wrong in the factory. So he dye cut the stem where it has been worn away from me trying to get the stem in place.

Now I have contacted winstanleys and told them this... And I'm hoping for a new bike or just a new stem?

But I was reading on the internet that winstanleys will take your bike and won't return it, especially if they think it's your fault and considering it has been dye cut/ re-tapped then they will notice?

Would it be worth just spending another £60 on a another headset ? Or should I risk sending it winstanleys? I just want to ridePhoto

When you tightened down the bolts did you tighten both of the top ones first, then try to tighten the bottom ones?

If so thats probably why it didn't line up right, your supposed to tighten stem bolts like so...

Top right
Bottom left
Top left
Bottom right

Winstanleys won't warrantee that because that's user error also you most likely voided the warrantee by getting it re tapped.

I'd just buy a new stem, or if yours is fine now just use that I guess.

Oh yeah i know pal smile that how I have tried doing my stem, and same with the bike specialist, In the picture I tightened the top ones up to show you how the bottom ones wouldn't fit in at all, the bottom hex bolt holes are like a mm off

But yeah I guess I will get a new stem, should I get the same one (éclat fist) or would you recommend anything better?

Oh ok mate, strange that tho cuz eclat are usually on point, must have been a factory defect or something.

As far as stems go, I suggest the animal jump off remix, best looking stem in my opinion, and animal are a very trustworthy company.

Great bike btw, always liked the envy, I have a wethepeople cream frame, love it; one of my favourite companies for sure.

You should post a bike check mate, which year did you get, the 2013?

I bought a full WTP Reason, but that came already built and was almost spot on (had to make a few adjustments).

I'd say contact them to see what they will do with it, preferably by email so you have proof of the conversation, try and make sure you get confirmation that you'll get the bike back whether it's repaired or not and then you're good to go. I honestly don't see why they would keep the bike if it was your fault it's knackered.. Doesn't seem realistic. However, with this proof, IF they do keep it, for whatever reason, you can go to come kind of court or law agency and get it back or get your FULL money back.

BUT, if you do just want to be safe and aren't bothered about the money, just buy a new stem. But i don't think it's fair to accept something that was potentially wrong in the first place and then have to fork out more money for it yourself.

This is a particular with Eclat stems. Make sure that all 4 bolts are threaded. Then, tighten the top bolts all the way - then the bottom bolts. There will be a gap on the bottom. Eclat has designed them to be this way. See the installation pdf for details.

@fondue nah, if you look at the photo, that's as far as I can screw it in, without it cross-threading, it's quite hard to show over the internet, I know what you mean though, but i have ruled out the smile

@soulrebelrastaman it's a wethepeople envy 14, my dad says he's going to re-file the stem base, ad completely re-tap and thread the stem.. And if it isn't strong enough or doesn't work, he said he can by me the part, as I have no money

If it's that much if an issue just get a new stem. The sunday freeze Stem is cheap and I believe a bunch of the pros are riding it. It comes in a top load and front load too, in case you decide you wanna change it up or whatever

Honestly? Who gives a shit. Its the fucking internet. I hate all of you equally.

Winstanleys have replied saying they have contacted wethepeople, and they said they will contact me in 48 hours, I'm hoping everything gets sorted.

But apart from the stem issue so far, the bike looks amazing, and I'm happy with it... Haven't even rode it yet cool cheerful

A friend has a Eclat Fist stem off this kid that he traded and the bolt is stuck in the stem , but it snapped I guess so the head isn't there , its just the screw.

Just to let you, and everyone else know, I got a call of winstanleys, and wethepeople, have admitted that it was probably cut wrong, and they apologise for any inconvenience, they are sending me out a new stem for free.

When I get the stem, I shall be doing a bike Check, but thanks for yours and everybody's help and advice. It's good to know that this forum isn't full of nobs. Peace.

Kinda makes one wonder how many were cut wrong. That's a really basic step. Lesson learned for me is to stick with what works, that being offset cuts are unnecessary. Glad it's getting fixed.
