Got a couple choices:

2017 Mongoose Mode 900 $169, new

The good
-full chromoly frame, fork, bars, cranks
-sealed cassette
-double wall rims

The bad
-unsealed front wheel, bb, headset
-crappy tires, stem, chain

2011 Fit Van Homan 2 $150, used

The good
-chromoly frame except seat & chain stays
-chromoly fork, bars, cranks
-sealed cassette, front hub, bb, headset
-double wall rims

The bad
-railed seat
-hi-ten seat & chain stays

I like the Mode 900, but the upgrades could ad up real fast. What's your choice? Thanks!

Personally I would save more being that it is winter and crappy out and get something better in a couple months.

I saw the Mongoose recently at a contest (they gave one away in the AM contest). I was impressed. Looked good.

I would rather have a full chromo set up, and then replace the parts that are going to wear anyways with better parts as they go. A strong skeleton is more important to me at first

Mongoose now...or save up and get a full chromo bike with better parts a couple of months down the road

I agree with Dave, try to save up for something better. But if those are your only 2 options, go with the fit.

Mode 900 will always be a good, solid buy in my eyes.

Out of the 2 I'd go for the fit. It'll be a poop ton easier to upgrade and hi ten isn't really all that bad for a beginners bike, I doubt you'll snap the rear triangle off in a hurry.
But ideally, you should do what everyone else has said, save up a bit more and keep an eye out for second hand custom builds.
