Why Do Brake Pads Weigh So Much?

I swear... I checked out 14 sets of brake pads yesterday and they all weighed a lot. I mean you could feel the weight. I will add they were in the packaging but still. I don't get it. Is there something I'm missing? To me it's just rubber with a little bit of metal. Maybe someone could "brake" it down for me.

Skip the brakeless comments... you would not drive a car without brakes... or maybe you would.

You won't notice the weight of the pads on your bike from one to another.

People notice rotational weight more due to the gyroscopic effect which makes changing direction and angles it the air more difficult.

See this is my issue. My front end is so light. When I pick up the back end I feel the weight. I know all bikes are like this. I'm just trying to find some ways to take it down a notch. I love brakes on my bike. I was just amazed how much the pads add to the weight.

Yeah i get what your saying, my bike was like that too and that does add to how much you feel the weight in the back, i fixed it by getting slightly heavier bars but like adam said front brakes would work too

This has to be a joke.

You cannot feel brake pads compared to no brake pads weight-wise. Seriously. And as far as other weights, thinner tires, lighter rims, thinner tubes will be a huge difference. Anything rotational will make a big difference.

All these pads I checked were a pound or more. If you don't believe me then go to your local shop and feel the weight. We even put some of them on a scale.

It's not about feeling it while it's installed on the bike. Unlike other people I know what my bike weighs. I've put on some expensive parts on my bike to cut weight. I was simply stating and questioning why they weigh so much.

Brake pads are like an ounce. If that. And even if you're honestly this much of a weight whore, consider this- majority of your cable and also your lever are on the front of your bike. And if it still weighs down your bike too much, drill some holes in your frame, you vagina.

Oh you're a little saucy today huh. The pads I saw were 5-15 ounces. Maybe you should think before you type. You clearly have no knowledge. Carry on being stupid.

I'm sorry. I'm in a bad mood and I shouldnt take it out on anyone on here. However, ody ghost pads are 1oz a pair and are 1/3-1/4 the size of any other pad. 5oz a pair. max. If you can't handle 5oz then don't run brakes

I worked at a shop for 4 years, saw nearly every BMX pad possible. NONE of them weighed a pound, so their scale is very incorrect. A few ounces TOPS. My odyssey clear pads are about 2 ounces give or take.

So to answer your question, they don't weigh a pound. Maybe the packaging contributed to it, but I have NEVER seen brake pads for a bike clear more than a few ounces, and I have worked on literally thousands of bikes.

So I am calling incorrect information, if you want me to be a jerk, BULLSHIT.

Show me a video of the scale zeroed and then put the pads on the scale with your vital name on a piece of paper in the shot, and prove they weigh a pound.

What they are saying is true there's no way brake pads weigh that much, its most likely the packaging that adds the weight
