Will wider rims cause a thicker / wider tire?

Yes.
Until recently I had a 36mm wide rim on front and 38mm rim on the back. It was fine as long as I ran a 2.25"/2.4" tyre setup but I wanted to get back to a thinner 2.25" on the front, and with the wider rim, the back tyre felt bigger and it rodes weird.
So I bought a second 38mm rim for the front and I'm happy right now.

because this is the internet and we'll be damned if we use any sort of sense and logical reasoning!

but he has a point, your question was answered in the other thread. They're an ugly ass rim made by a greedy company that doesn't pay their riders.
