so I went to some local trails yesterday and had a blast, so im thinking about riding trails more often...but im brakeless, and you start hauling ass when youre riding just right. so I need brakes, whats everyone ride here? evo 2's? also I have a black rear rim, so should I rock clear pads? I know jack shit about brakes cause I haven't rode them since like 1999

I run salt echo brakes (think that's their name) but will be upgrading to evo 2s soon, I like the fact that you get 3 springs each with different resistance so you can really dial in the feel of the brake. I'm using clear pads on my black rim which is working perfectlysmile I'd say just get a full odyssey brake set up. Evo2s, sls sick cable and a monolever

that's probably what im going to do. haven't heard a bad thing about the evo2s

Some times the evo II mounting screws are too long. For the brake mounts. No biggie

Another Evo II vote. I did have some trouble getting the springs to fit on one time, but a quality brake.

Clear pads.

A diatech level brake, decent lever and a straight cable would be swell.

I liked evos but look into the fly manuals, super simple set up and so far my favorite brakes out of the 4 I've had.

Springfields and ghost pads, cuz working on brakes sucks.

|

8/24/2015 2:40 PM

those springfields seem like the spring would break easily....I know odyssey makes good shit, but that seems like a bad design...tecnic1 do you ride those? do they hold up well?

Oddyssey Springfield brakes work great for trails..
Haven't had any problems with the spring yet.. I thought they would suck at first, but they proved me wrong for cheap brakes

So the very first run had some issues with the springs breaking, but later runs come with a different spring, and a spare.

I broke like two springs when they first came out, and zero in the like 18 months since.

I don't run them because I have chainstay brakes, and the clearance isn't quite as good as the evos, but both of my kids have been running them since they came out.

nice. I figure its not too bad of a deal. $30 for the Springfield kit. if I have any problems ill just upgrade what breaks.

Kink devise (I think thats the name) with clear salt plus propeller brake pads, an Odyssey linear cable, with maybe a spoke mod, and any lever should be good to go.

Chrome rims and clear pads have the best braking power btw.

It doesn't matter where a train goes. It's decidin' to get on that does.

What's the clearance for tires like on the Springfields? My current brakes are barely futting my current tire, and it's the 2.00" TWW. Or does the clearance depend on how far apart your posts are spaced?

Don't buy cheap brakes, you'll get turned off of all brakes due to them breaking and constantly needing adjusting. Buy fly manuals and be done with it

Springfield has the most tire clearance.

i don't like brakes anyways. lol. just using them for trails. probably only for the next 2 months....I eventually want to build a dedicated trail bike, and that will have a dialed brake setup

Why spend extra down the road when you can do it right the first time?

cause in the grand scheme of things, 30 bucks now and 60 bucks in a year from now doesn't really matter. its going to get too cold to ride trails here in a couple of months, so the brakes will be coming off once I go back to riding the indoor parks during late fall / winter / early spring. If I get my other bike built by the time trails open back up ill put on some good brakes.....who knows...maybe i'll end up hating trails.

Cause realistically, Springfield's are the real deal. I've used Evo 2s, Promaxes, Eclats, Kink Desist and Springfield's, and honestly, the only real reason Springfield's aren't as good as anything else is chain clearance. The Promax brakes might be a bit stiffer, Eclats might have more tire clearance, but really, if you don't like a really heavy pull, Springfield's are as good as the rest of those.

Oh, before anyone tries to say I'm bullshittin about trying all those brakes:
