why do people run their rear brake lever on the right hand side of the bar?
doesn't make sense to me who has always had bikes with the rear brake lever on the left......

Same reason you like it on the left side

I am English/American, lived in both countries.

"If I recall right" it had to do with driving/riding hand signals. Right hand drive, would be right hand used for signals, So rear brake used by left hand. Left hand drive, would be Left hand used for signals, So rear brake used by right hand.

ok thanks.

But a lever i found says it is for right hand?
Why would this be the case?

You can use right lever on left, but it will be flipped upside down
Left and right levers are just mirrored, everything else is the same

When I had a brake I always had the lever on the right (over here it's supposed to be on the left). The main reason was because I done one handed tricks with my left hand, and didn't want the lever getting in the way

Has to do with where you live, but, more importantly, personal preference.

I know in the U.K., riders tend to have left. I think Australia as well. But seriously, it doesn't matter.

On a side note, Australian rider Alex Hiam went from left lever to right lever between 2013 and 2015, I think. Just goes to show, none of this is really important and not one side is better than the other in terms of functionality. Personal. Preference.

The most practical reason would be for turndowns, getting the lever stuck in your pants pocket sucks a lot.
