I am making this thread because as sad as this is, I have NEVER hit a dirt jump, or any type of launch ramp for that matter... I am 27. Aside from me bunny hopping off a curb, or just bunny hopping in general, i have never felt "air" lol

I've never been to a park before, and have never had the chance to try any of this stuff out but I really wanna catch some air you guys, it's killing me. I need to know what it feels like lol I really want to start making a few dirt jumps in my backyard, but I am worried about a few things, maybe you guys could help clear some things up for me.

1. How was your first dirt jump/launch ramp experience? Did you fall? Nose dive? Go over the bars? ... I really would love to hear about some first time experiences getting air on some sort of launch ramp.

2. When you are in the air, do you ever get that feeling in your stomach from the negative G force? (That feeling that you get when you drive over a hill too fast or do one of those tower drops at an amusement park)?

3. Do you think it's too late to learn how to hit ramps and dirt jumps being I am 27? I know the earlier you start the better obviously, but I am worried that my age will limit how far I can go in bmx... I heard on the show Going Deep with David Reese that if you want to learn how to climb a tree it is best to learn before age 25, and that if you try to learn after age 25 it will be near impossible to get the swing of tree climbing. I hope this isn't the case for bmx, if so I am fucked lol

Any advice will be heard and appreciated!

Okay, my first real dirt jump was in my friends back yard when i was younger and i had a really shitty bike. it had the front shocks and it just sent me wrong and i basically landed on the seat and bounced. I was like 7? Another time i really remember feeling air was in this parking lot there was this mound of dirt i pedaled really fast at. I had no clue what i was doing and i do remember sticking it. Like i FLEW or atleast it felt like i did. I know i went like 3 feet off this tiny jump. Idk how far but i remember how high. Loved that, but scared me because i was still super young. Eventually i remember just building little jumps at this park and trying those. I actually was the first one to ever try jumping over this road. There was like 2 little spine type dirt things and i just cranked it and cased pretty hard but rolled away. That was when i got my first real BMX bike. It was a Haro Nyquist Backtrail x4 and i remember actually landing it on the Stolen i got after.

for the second question, i get that feeling of being on a roller coaster going fast over a big hump. It is sweet. Like a weightless type feel, but more control because you're in the air on a bike. I feel safe and i love it. Its actually fucking amazing when you're doing a big ass roof drop or you are like 4-6 feet up and you can almost look around and see stuff from up high for a second or two. But if you suck at riding really bad, its terrifying and you'll probably eat shit. Like the time i went fast and tried a barrel roll, i actually got the majority of the spin i just landed sideways and slid in the grass.

For the third, you are never too old to learn a trick. ever. Building jumps isn't hard. Pile some dirt, smooth it out, figure the right trajectory and pack it. I'd start with some pumping and basic smaller jumps and build onto them if you never did it ever. Ask some friends that actually ride dirt or park to help you figure it out.

Good luck!

1 my first launch.... I think it was when I was 9 at the local bmx park (it was shut down some time ago) and I just sped at the jump (it was like 4 foot gap tabletop 3ft tall) and I nose dived and fell on my face :3 i was in a full face helmet. after that, I pressed the brakes whenever came to a jump ;(
Anyway, the first actual air Ive ever done was at Paine's park in Philadelphia, I aired a 6 foot hip on my old diamondback around 3 ft (woohooo it was scary) Iafter I got my mirraco, I got more and more confident, airing stuff. I still don't air out on quarters yet pinch

2. no I don't get that felling. I stay calm and focused. sideways

I built a dirt jump in my backyard bigger than I was used to, and to get used to it, I would speed at it and jump it to the side, over and over. untill I got hurt.

Just stay loose and cruise off the lip don't try to hop. Imagine it being a giant roller, like you never even left the ground.

Get diggin! It sounds weird but bigger jumps are easier to hit than super small ones. I'd say a 4-5 foot tall lip is a good starter, leave the landing somewhat soft and send it!

I say just pull back really fucking hard and get ready to land right. Stay loose in the air if you can. Just because you're six foot in the air doesn't mean you should stiffen up unless you know you're gonna case. Then push that backend down into the top of the landing. And if you fuck the jump real back you better fix that shit. haha

Just build them and ride. That's it.

Doesn't matter how old you are.

Reading your first time jump adventures was fun man. Thanks for sharing that with me! Kind of helps me know what to expect when I am ready to actually do this lol

Hmmm, going fast over a big hump sounds like an insane amount of fun! I need to get to a park to try some different altitudes out lol

Damn dude a barrel roll off a roof jump??? Did I read that right? lol!! awesome, sorry you didn't land it though that sucks but kudos for even attempting a roof jump man. That literally would terrify me at the moment lol

To be honest, I have no riding friends it SUCKS lol I am a loner at 27 who just rides by himself lol Maybe If I had friends to ride with I'd be more inclined to attempt crazier shit by following someone but for now I am just going into it blindly by myself lol

nose dive onto the face!!! Thats a huge fear of mine! lol thank goodness you had a full face helmet on man. hey man, no worries about not airing out on quarters yet - your progression schools mine lol thanks for sharing your stories with me as well dude, highly appreciated!

its a good thing you don't get that feeling lol sometimes my hands get sweaty when I get that feeling in a car, or on a roller coaster or something, hopefully my hands stay dry on my bike! Good thing for gloves lmao

great advice man! I wasn't sure if a hopping motion was necessary to get more air. Your basically saying just go fast, stay loose and hit that shit huh? 4-5 feet sounds good, can't hurt too much falling from 6 or 7 feet in the air right? lol

I know that feeling in your gut when your falling. I haven't had that sensation since i was little when my dad used to drive fast over this big hill in my old town. You don't get that on a bike.

You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start, to be great...

I do when I am super high up or doing something that scares the piss outta me. Not the weightless feeling but the huge adrenaline rush feeling.

Yea stay loose, as long as your not tensed up you'll be good, lean back slightly if you build a steeper lip.

If you don't have a hill you should definitely try to build a small roll in to get some speed and maybe put a mellow roller before the lip to kinda get loose before you hit it. When you're riding trails falling is pretty much part of the game haha

Watch this if you want to get pumped up to go dig! ">

Nahh i did a regular roof drop, bad choice.

The barrel roll was off the 4 foot jump and it didn't end well at all. but it was fun as fuck to try! grass is pretty forgiving.

i spent about 2 years riding trails and park only before i found the joys and creativity of street riding. i've been riding for 8 years and i still don't have 180 completely locked, but i can table-air any ramp or jump. the G-force feeling in the gut is the main reason i ride my bike. it's like unassisted flight. best feeling ever. and even better, dirt is soft! waaayyyyy less painful if you fudge the bucket compared to concrete.

Thanks for your input man, that is the type of stuff i like to hear! Unassisted flight, sounds so sweet lol I still have yet to catch any air, but hopefully that'll change very soon... Will update as soon as it happens. Lol I'm sure I'll have some bails to tell everyone about lol
