i use a hammer and my socket wrench because it doesnt have a sharp edge that could damage the seals.

Yes.

If you use a screwdriver, you best have some replacement bearings (which it sounds like you do) I try to use a socket wrench extension, or something with a larger blunt end rather than a sharp point.
