So my boy wants a new BMX.

he got an old mongoose menace recently and has been loving it so we have decided that he can get a modern one .
He likes the skate park.

Reading up it seems that cromo frames are way preferable and we have found a couple of bikes online that seem to offer a good set up for a price we can afford (and that look cool)

The question is will they be too big for him and is stolen a quality brand ?

so he is around 5'3" but growing fast and these are the bikes we are considering.

he prefers the look of the heist . I am concerned they are too big for him.

Any help much appreciated

Cheers

That isn't a bad bike. It has a 20.75 Top Tube so he has rom to grow into it as i'm 6ft and I ride a 20.75. It is a nice size bike and doesn't weigh that much.

Look for a Sunday , WeThePeople , or Fit in your price range. Theyre preferably the best there is for complete bikes right now, and I know the sunday comes in 20" tt which he wont have a problem riding and will make learning things very easy. Its hard to find 20" framed bikes, and a 20.5/20.75 might be too big and he'll have troubles moving it around. The Fit completes put shorter chainstays on their lower end bikes with children in mind (makes it easier to get the bike off the ground or do wheelies). And WTP makes probably the best there is for a complete.

I would personally go with a 20"tt Sunday, and if not, either the Fit or WTP in 20.25 or 20.5 would be a wise second choice.

just have a look to see if the bearings are sealed or unsealed. You will want to bee looking at bikes with sealed bearings as they will last far longer.

Both great, though I would look for a Sunday AM 20" for just a tad more. Definitely worth the extra.

Sealed bearings you say ....

on the sunday it says...

BOTTOM BRACKET: 19mm Sealed Mid
REAR HUB: Sealed Cassette, 14mm, 36-H, 9-T

FRONT HUB: Looseball 3/8" axle, 36-H, Low Flange

Loose ball... is that unsealed ?

Or WTP Curse 20" if you can find one, thats probably the best bang for your buck.

Alright alright alright. I did a bit more research and found these. They are all 20.25 which is just as good, have shorter chain stays which will help him alot in learning new tricks, and have sealed front and rear hubs. They also have alot more chromoly than than the sunday and wtp's.

All of these bikes are virtually the same, so if you find a website that stocks them, let him choose based on the color scheme. And if not, let him choose one off this picture and ask your local bike shop to order it. Photo

thank you very much for your help with this !!

seems they are easily available in the UK but coming in at 400 quid is a little expensive.
I will try to find last years model

|

12/8/2013 2:30 PM

No problem, sir. I definitely think the fits are your best bet in 20.25". That will give him a long lasting, reliable bike with a size that he will be able to adjust to aswell as grow in to. It also provides him the shorter chain stays which will make hopping and wheelies so much easier. These bikes are designed and intended for the use of young children getting into bmx, and giving them a good start.

Good luck. smile

not finding any Fit bikes with discounts except this

http://www.fluidbmx.co.uk/completes/fit-2013-benny-1-20-slate-blue.html

are the tyres especially large ?

might just have to bite the bullet and find the extra $$

You probably wont find them on sale. As I said before, I would show him the pic that I posted, let him choose the one he likes, and have your LBS order it.

That one you posted looks good too. Im kinda thinking the 20.25 might be a better choice however. And yes the tires are pretty huge, its a new trend in bmx (not one that im fond of) but it actually makes the bike a bit more comfortable. A lot more cushion when landing aswell as more traction and greater stability.

I will have to give it some thought .. it a lot of money

does the jump in price make that much difference ?

|

12/8/2013 3:06 PM

a fit is imo an awesome choice at that price range
they have great geo as tim said, cool colors, and decent components

http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/p/9423/fit-dugan-1-bmx-bike-2013-sale

This any good ? Last years comes in 70 sheets cheaper

or this one same price but TT 20.5 vs 20 on the first one

http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/p/9422/fit-bf-1-bmx-bike-2013-sale

From what i can deduce the few 2013s out there dont have the 20.25 TT but a 20 or 20.5.

|

12/9/2013 1:42 AM

all of those fit bikes were 399 dollars, this equates to 244GBP. this makes them in your price range

I would prefer the second one, but saying that I am on the tall side. But both will be awesome and your dude will be extatic.
