Sick... I wish there was some dirt around here. It's all crap and old strip mines. Won't stop me from building a trail this year.

I'm considering picking up a freeride bike for the mountains and this crap that all the locals here call great riding. I don't know a thing about it, but it looks like good times. I'm killing my bike (and my back) riding all the crag around here.

Go figure.

I already answerd this one in another forum...

I quote myself...

Um...ok, if you want to call it that, I call it a BMX bike, just bigger wheels.

You can do Tailwhips on these bikes, flips, nothings, and at least 2 dozen bmx stunts I'm not even mentioning, park, street, dirt. Whats my having suspention, bigger wheels, or gears have anything to do with it - my new bikes geometry is jump, park, street specific. So again, a tailwhip or flip is stiil a tailwhip or flip, I dont see how my having any of the above mentioed parts changes that or the distinction between my bike or what a bmx bike is supposed to be.

In my years in bmx I've seen various manufactures make gears or suspention for bmx bikes, but I dont call bmx bikes mtb bikes beacause of the forks or gears, there are used differently and there geometry is slighty different. You see where I'm going with this?

To further illistrate to what I'm saying...

I usta own the bike pictured below (in fact I had a yellow one like pictured), its a SE Racing 26" cruiser with 26" wheels. I had a version of this bike (SE version ) with a derailer hanger and front shocks. Does that make it a mtb bike, no, and most of you I'm sure would still call it a bmx.

SE's newest offerings...

Both are the same frame with slight differences in geometry and frame matieral, but different parts...is it a bmx bike, or a mtb bike?

Personally, IMO, its still a bmx

Anyway, it dont really matter...not trying to win an argument or anything, just something to think about.

Well... MTBs are the shit. I can ride things on an MTB that I would die attempting on a BMX. Hence, the reason they exist.

But anyway...

Aren't they making 26" BMX bikes now? Like Volume/Demolition's Sledgehammer? To me it looks like a cruiser handlebar slapped on a hardtail 26er.

Yup, only reason I dont buy a Volume is its cheap ass steal...and its lacking the lower top tube or shorter seat tube. Actually, I like my alleged Ironhorse Mountain (cough*bmx*cough) Bike better....hahahaha

Haro make a sic ass "moutin dirt jumper" it has gearing like a bmx bike my friend just bought his and it rides pretty nice but its to big for me but they are sic and you have to learn a totally diff way to ride them cuz of the shocks for forks but it tight.

Those are really just hybrids... tkaing components from both forms of riding.

I personaly think the mountain bike style handles bars look funny... always have. *shrug*

Jeff...

That last bike is the sickest thing I've ever seen. I'm in love.

And...

I wouldn't call them "hybrids". They're definitely bmx bikes for the most part. There have been 26" bmx bikes for ages. And the shorter bars make for greater stability over larger wheels.

I don't want to get into an evolution of the bike thing, but freeride bikes are built for people that want to ride freely. To some people that means a hard tail, rigid forks and 20" wheels.

Eh....

I hear that...the Sinisters aint cheap...700.00 (frame only), hell even the S&M's aint cheap, Tiawan made Riots are about 300.00 I think and the USA made Mob's are around 600.00.

I'm still debating actually, the S&Ms are really sick and I like the riding charteristics of chromoly better then aluminum, but on the other hand the Sinisters are pretty much the ultimate you can get...ahhhhhh, decisions.

No... Not an MTB. Not MTB geometry. Please don't argue with us on this one.

Actually... This is why I hate marketing. If anything it's an ATB. They're actually designed more for street and dirt jumping than mountain. The populus looks at anything with 26" wheels as MTBs though, yet... They are all pictured in skateparks and BMX trails. WTF!?

I guess we're damned.

Exactly...if you look at the very first "mountain bikes" they were pretty much "big" bmx bikes...

About the same time 24" cruisers came out, yet again...a bmx bike with "bigger" wheels.

Dont know about anyone else, but my first bmx bike looked exactly like whats pictured above, only difference is wheel size, frame size and the fact that gears and road bike parts were added to the bikes pictured.

This isnt my first bike pictured, however the bike pictured has the same parts and frame are almost identical to my first bike, its also the same year.

Year was 1975

Some of you might be asking why I was on such a horrible bike, for one, it was all we had when kids were my age, it was a b-day gift, and GT's and Diamondback had barely come out. BMX wasnt even a sport yet, nor did we have the ABA or NBL, that didnt happen till a year later (1976).

So when you hear me say I along with alot of young kids growing up in Cali practically invented BMX as a sport you now know I'm not just talkin out my ass, I was there in 1975 from the begining of BMX jumping my bike and trying to learn tricks and stuff.

I was trying to refrain from this because I'm not an expert. But here we go...

Back in about the 80's, a group of people were looking for a little more excitement from their cycling. They were BMXers. One group (mid-westers and east costers for the most part) took some road frames and bulked up the tires. They took these bikes to the mountains and tested and blah blah... Ta da... A mountain...

Another group around the same time (out Cali way) took a cruiser and pretty much did the same thing... Ta da... A dirt jumper.

A mountain bike is made for enduro riding of mountains and trails. They have a million gears, light as hell, and most still have rigid forks.

[LINK TO IMAGE]

Now, it's annoying, but note the geometry of this mountain bike.

And below... A road bike... Again... Note the geometry...

Photo

Here is a modern mountain bike. If you were to "connect the dots" you would have the same geometry as above...

[LINK TO IMAGE]

Now our beloved BMX...

[LINK TO IMAGE]

Our loathed cruiser...

[LINK TO IMAGE]

And our Dirt Jumper, 4X, Urban, Freeride BMX!!

[LINK TO IMAGE]

That should say enough, but if you are still having trouble... Forget about the bars and forks and wheels... Then look at the rear triangles.

End rant...
