well got my forks from mario (thanks again man) checked the fit on my headset, good enough, not perfect, but good enough to ride on for now- so, i took the forks to the wirewheel on my bench grinder, about an hour later, i got these
Photo

i wiped them clean, and put some neverdull on them in the mean time to keep it from rusting, just reassembled to keep it all together,
got allota polishin ahead of me, and still need to do the inside of the forks, and on the dropouts, so anybody got any polishes to reccomend?

I usually use really fine sand paper on steel befpre polishing gives a much better result.

If youre gonna polish steel you may aswell get it powdered clear. Rattle can clear will work for a bit but as soon as it starts to rust, say byebye to all that hard work.

ive inquired to a body shop about how much it'll cost to chrome plate them, hopefully I hear back from them before i do clear coat it, but it'd still have to basically get polished to near chrome for the chrome plating to look its best.

you can powder coat in clear O.o ? what socery is this?

No. The companies that make raw parts just take their time to rattlecan them really well.

And you may aswell buy new chrome forks for the price of chroming those.

Contact Chrome masters.com. I've had them do my frame, bars, stems and sprocket... AMAZING WORK! They say you can't chrome aluminum well, chrome masters can. Everything I sent in was original black painted , they'll do all the work and better then anyone.

Chroming is only worth it if you are really attatched to a part, its more cost effective to buy a new part in chrome. I would do a tutorial on polishing steel but my first went down like a lead balloon.

Meh I might just use some gloss black and take them back to spec, will depend on how much effort I feel like... Be ashame to hide those pretty welds tho. I'll post pics as I go. Knowing my ocd I'll probably have then nearly mirror polished... I'm sure if i use a high quality automotive grade gloss it'll be fine... Like 3or 4 coats and it should be good.

Just so you know, by sanding/polishing you will remove any coloring of the weld that may still be there from the manufacturing process.

Weld color doesn't really do much. The color was already removed anyways when I brushed the forks on the bench grinder. Didn't have any stripper. I just want to get the forks as close as possible to mirror polished as possible I know it'll dull some when I clear coat it, but hey. Don't want it rusting... Besides their odyssey forks. For me the weld color isn't the pretty part. It's the bead lines, their so smooth and perfect I've never seen nicer welding not even on my dad's old 1970s schwinn varsity

Gotcha, well that schwinn probably wasn't TIG welded. smile

But yea, finer and finer grit sandpaper, polish a LOT. Then take it to an auto body shop for clear coat.
