hi all

i posted this in general bmx talk because i'm more likely to get a quicker answer

coming up 3 years ago now, i broke my right scaphoid it's a pretty common bone to brake because all it takes is a outstretched arm and a awkward landing angle and that will do you nicely.

i had surgery they did a screw threw both parts of the broken bone, it healed non-union witch means the bone didn't join up as it should have because of restrcited blood flow to the bone, now this is also common. but what now?

speaking to my public surgeon who is a wrist specialist he said he can't fix it or knows of no way to fix this problem so my question is... is anyone in the same situation as me? my bone has been broken for 3 years and i can't ride comfortably since it's taken 3 years because it took this long to see the surgeon i'm going to be seeing soon.

has anyone one ever had a wrist reconstruction? or reconstruction of the scaphoid?

i had it on my ankle

took me out of the game for a year and a half

but im fine now, the only advice i can give you is to take it easy, and keep your wrist in the sun

cause when my ankle gets cold it hurts really bad and starts to crack

My refs ?... Nigga just ask about me

man they can put Ti screws into the bones... but in my opinion that was negligence... it can't get together and heal just like new but the osteogenic cells do they work pretty well healing bones... your scaphoid must be pretty separated to not heal efficiently and remain broke
idk very well the human anatomy (i'm in vet med school) but in any specie the wrist, ankle and knee are the most complicated articulations.. you should look for a specialist on wrists... i hope you can fix it dude

Yeah, definately look for a new wrist specialist. "Not fixable" is not acceptable. I have had a few orthopedic surgeries, and currently have more than a couple pieces of hardware in my body, and trust me it is worth it to look into these things as thoroughly as possible.

Also, I know from my experience in physical therapy that there are exercises you can do to stimulate bone growth. I'm not sure what those would be for your particular injury, but it's something worth bringing up to your doc. They also have dietary supplements that promote bone growth. I took those with my tib/fib spiral fracture (pic on profile) and it seemed to help quite a bit.

thanks mate

the reasons it might be unfixable is because the proximal pole side of my scaphoid witch is the side in the side of your wrist is shattered into about 10 little peices, but the other half of the bone is ok.

yeah, well his wouldn't have been shattered so that's good luck for him!

oh yeah your arm looks pretty seperated there

thanks for the info man i'll look into the physio bone growth techniques

and yeah i just find it so hard to FIND surgeons.. where do you start to look? all i can do is get referals from other surgeons i've seen in the past

but in 3 years i've only spoken to the one public surgeon who says he can't fix it and he gave me the name of 3 other wrist reconstruction and plastic surgeons he said they might have an idea of what we can do

i asked my surgeon if he though it would be possible to take a scaphoid of a dead body! and try and fit it up but then there's the risk of bone disease and my body rejecting the bone..

i just wish there was a simple answer my problem isn't so common but they can reconstruct shattered SKULS.. why not other bones too?

with all the tech these days in and research?

and yet they're putting all the money into fucking making the games on the gold coast instead of hospitals!

Im gonna guess based on what you wrote you quoted the wrong person and meant to quote me? If not just ignore.

But yeah, that was my left leg actually, Tib/Fib spiral fracture...pretty damn lengthy recovery. But as far as finding other surgeons, first off all you could look in your phone book, find some names, and do a couple google or other searches and find out what people have said about them, what their credentials are, etc.

Also just ask around. If you know some people who have had orthopedic surgeries, ask them if they were happy with the results, and if so who their surgeon was. Hope this helps, if you have any other ?'s just ask.

what about taking it out and replacing it with a plastic-type scaphoid???

i snapped my leg in half, spiral fracture to both tibia and phibula, i had it reconstructive surgery on it, only thing that sucks about it is A) it gets freaking cold easily, and cool it's no longer half as strong muscle wise.. my advice would probibly be try canada... cheaper and my surgion did a freaking good job...

You could look up wrist specialists online, and see what comes up. maybe webmd or something would have a list...

SethLex yeah i meant to quote you

the only thing i havn't tried is looking in the phone book lol

i'll give that a shot if these other 3 surgeons i've got referals for are unable to fix it

someone's got to have looked into this before..

just gona be hard to find someone

oh yeah mate as long as you can still ride

what have you done about it have you asked any hand surgeons if they can help you? and is the bone dead because it didn't join back together?

there's alot of talk about plastic surgery and at first i thought it was a good idea but my surgeon said because plastic's don't compress like bone you will have bad arthritis fast ect.

same with titanium could you imagine what metal rubbing on bone would do after a while?let along the arthritis

there are other things he can do such as;

taking the scaphoid out completely and moving the 4-5 other bones around in my wrist this would stop all the pain but i would have NO flexability.. so how can i ride when i'm holding my wrist so straight that i need an upsweep of 30 degress on my bars. you know?

another thing is what's called rib graft authroplasty surgery, they take a graft from your rib and shape it like one half of a scahpoid and there's not much pain, and decent flexability but once again.. because the rib bone is softer then the a hard bone like the scahpoid the longest it can last before ur wrist is fucked again is 5 years in most cases, and in my case it would be about 3 months riding on it all the time

so that all fails

so does everything i've ever though of except for finding some miracle surgeon who can reconstruct my shattered one half on my scahpoid and once that heals, putting a screw through both sides and rejoining it then BAM my wrist is like new

i wish i could just go on the news and ask the world if anyone can help me
