So i was browsing my local craigslist i saw some guy was selling a frame but he said it was cracked but then he got it welded by a professional. My question is it a good idea or bad idea to buy a welded frame from someone if it a good idea explain or if it a bad explain on why buying a welded.

Never, ever buy a frame that was broken and rewelded. It will be significantly weaker.

1. Try using better grammar.
2. Bad idea. Do you have proof it was "welded by a professsional"?
3. Never buy a rewelded part.

Get some better pictures of it. If you are just getting into BMX and the welder was descent you will have no problems. Most of the people on here would never have problems either. Get some better pics of the welds. What kind of frame is it?

This. And also don't sugar coat things. If a part's shit, call it fucking shit, I don't give a fuck how it works for most people. Good enough isn't good enough.

Daryl nau gets his re welded and he's probably harder on his bike then everyone saying no with no experience of it on here

It all depends how much you want out of it

|

I would pass on that, the new weld doesn't even look that good either so I doubt it was professionally welded. Then again the picture is shitty so it's hard to tell for sure.

Unless he's selling it super cheap, then pass.

Not necessarily.

If being an idiot means you don't want to ride a part that can potentially fail much faster, then call me an idiot as well. I would rather not trust something that was snapped/cracked and then rewelded, no matter who welded it. Doesn't rewelding also fuck with the heat treatment in the tubing as well? It would also weaken that area in the tubing as well then right?

But you also have a point that for MOST people, it would not be an issue. Most people as in, people who don't ride that hard or people who do not care if they have a frame that already broke once and needed rewelded.

I am referring to his "good enough" statement. If I was 13 and had no money and could get a rewelded colony frame for $20 you're damn right Id go for it. A lot of it depends on the weld though.

Referring to your heat treatment question. It all depends on the heat treatment that was on the original frame and the alloy used. I welded brake mounts on my Ivy 3 and have 100% confidence in it...and I did not heat treat it again.

Ohhh, well that I agree with heavily as I said something about the cost a few posts above. If it were $20 and I needed a frame, I'd get it for sure. But obviously keep an eye on it.

And that's what I figured, thanks for clearing that up though.

Ok the guy wants 80.00 for the frame. I know that is to much for a reweled frame so i'm not going to buy it.

You can get a frame here on Vital for 100$.

I knew a dude who had a frame repaired in the same area but with more cracks and ugly welds. He ran it for a good few months and rode everything. I myself was on a rewelded Shiv 1 fork for a while(pegless)and it held up pretty well. Though the guy who did em used to work on drag cars. His welds are much fatter than the pathetic ones from Fit.

That said, I personally, the way I ride, would not 100% trust a rewelded anything. The metal gets weaker each time it's repaired, but will hold up depending how you ride. .....but $80?

This. The exception is if it is like 10 dollars, and you are absolutely DESPERATE.

Don't do it.

If I was the one to break it, and knew what abuse that frame went through, THEN I would get it repaired and ride it carefully for a while.

This dude "had it welded by a professional" and you don't know what he put that frame through, or anything about who welded it. The look of that weld tells me it was NOT a professional in any manner, and it looks like it was MIG (Wire feed) welded, which is AWFUL for frames (think department store frames most commonly).

Don't unless it is 10 bucks. Then make a flatland rig out of it.

I agree that is MIG welded, which is not necessarily bad for frames. (I tacked my brake mounts with a MIG). I agree something like that should be TIG welded. $80 is wayyyy to much.
