So I was sat here thinking, why is there such a weird mix of imperial and metric units in bmx? Or is it like this in all sports? For instance, frame measurenents are in inches, cranks length and spindle width are mm, sprocket bore is inches, steerer tube is mm in length and inches in width... it just all seem to be pretty random... anyone know why?

Good damn question, this is my ruling:

Some parts are in mm bc originally they were made overseas. Others were manufactured in America originally. haha

Idk whether or not this is true, but i feel like it is.

America did "officially" go to metric. People like my grandpa are both ignorant and arrogant. He refuses to learn and use metric.

The smaller measurements tend to be in mm and the larger ones tend to be in inches. I guess the reason why inches are used instead of centimetres is because as far as I know centimetres aren't an ISO unit of measurement. It definitely is confusing though, especially with things like seatposts and sprocket bore which are measured in millimetres but they are 23.8, 25.4mm etc. which seems random in millimetres but in inches they are 15/16" or 1" etc.

cm is more precise... you have... 1 Cm, that's 100mm
and a inch is 2.54cm

In the UK miles are still used for roads.

Whatever the reasoning, I think it’s easier to mentally conceptualize a measurement depending on the part. For example, crank arms are measured in mm as opposed to inches because it is easier to mentally “see” the difference between 170mm and 175mm. Contrast that with 6.69291” and 6.88976”.

My logic breaks down when you turn to tires, which are measured by the inch and mm. Usually you can find a size that looks like 57-406. Is that a 2.25”? Meanwhile, 56-406 is a 2.20”. It’s just ONE millimeter difference!
