On Friday, I was driving home from work. It was nonstop down pouring rain and the roads were slick. My truck has really shitty tires on it. There was in a truck infront of me fishtailing back and forth, so in an effort to avoid him, I turned left onto a different road. When I turned my back wheels started spinning and it forced my truck right. I tried to correct it but in the effort, my truck suddenly gripped and went straight and ran over a speed limit sign and went through a guy's yard. The guy who lived there came out and looked and said it was all good. He didnt take my license plate or ask for my name, Just went back inside. I sat around for 10 mins and waited to see if a cop was coming. Nothing. I called my dad because I wasn't sure to call or not and to let him know i broke a plow light on the truck. He told me to come home. I got home and not 2 mins later a cop showed up. He asked me what happened. My dad told him that he told me to come home. The cop took my license and came back and gave me a ticket for leaving. The cop was a major dick btw. But anyways, I have a court date on Aug 13 and I have to tell a judge what had happened and see what I'll be paying a ticket for. My dad thinks I'll be paying for leaving and for a new sign. But they could also take my license, which would be completely unreasonable. But Anyways, I'm fucking nervous as hell.

I really don't see anything other than you paying for the sign.Nobody was injured, and you wern't drunk. My guess is somebody driving by called 911.
Id tell them that you were going to call the police department when you got home and tell them you hit the sign, but a cop showed up before you could.

There was a guy in a Volvo that was literally following me and I think he may have called on me. Either way, I've only had my license since March and I had no clue I was suppose to call 911. Neither did my parents or my friends' parents.

I'm gonna tell the judge everything that happened. And that I learned my lesson and I'm willing to pay for the sign. Hopefully, that's the only thing I have to pay for.

Do you guys think I'll get any points on my license? I already know my insurance is going to go up.

Doubt you'll get in trouble, but I don't know how laws work in your state. I wouldn't have stopped at all and outran the guy following, but that's just me. Lol. I'd say just explain what happened with the truck and how you had no choice but to take corrective action or cause a serious accident, and that you spoke with the property owner and he said it was cool. I don't think taking out a sign will be a point, unless they count it as reckless driving, in which case you may lose your license. But like I said, I dunno how your local laws work. Either way, you might as well practice your story a few times cuz you've already been caught, and we all know that standing in front of the judge is pretty nerve racking whether you're innocent or not. Just play it cool and you should be fine.

The only reason I stopped is because It broke the light on the front of my plow and it was hanging and I didn't want it falling off. But thanks man! I feel good and confident now.

You haven't had your license long, so they might be lenient. Just tell the judge you were pretty shook up & didn't know what to do.

But yeah, leaving the scene of an accident, no matter how big or small, is illegal. so you might just get a fine or something, but idk how laws are in your state. I doubt you'll get a point on your license though but they might also have you pay for a new sign. really not sure, don't sweat it too much. That shit'll really claw at you haha

Worst case scenario is a week of community service. Chances are the case is going to be thrown out.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a friend of mine got charged with hit and run and got 20 hours of community service because she hit a fence and basically the same thing happened.

Did she stop and check everything was okay? Because I did. I made sure everything was okay with the owner of the house and he said it was and didn't take my name or license plate. I even waited for a cop to come and nothing.

I don't know the full story, but from what she said, I think so. But she also went to "teen court" (basicly a set up so that all the stoners in my town don't go to juvi) where if you show up you have a minimum of 15 hours. whereas in real court, that will probably get thrown out

Ahh okay! I have to go to real court. I really hope it gets thrown out. I don't want to pay tickets. I'm trying to save for my own truck.
