Single speed, disc front and rear brakes, no idea what brand it is.

It's either CrMo or Hi-ten I'm not going to sink a ton of money into it, and only work on it when I have spare cash for it.

That could be fun. You could also toss on some slicks and have a killer commuter.

Yeah, I think I'm going slicks, frontload stem, pivitol seat, 2-4" rise 2-piece bars, smaller chain ring in the front. Make it more 29'er "ish" and less like a MTB.

But first I have to strip it and get this crappy paint off it. It was abandonded yaers ago at my apartment building and whoever had it brush painted it with god knows what.

Cranks are shot, I think the bearing races might be
bent there really lose but the bottom bracket is tight and so are the crank arms.

I just pumped up the tires and rode it down the block and back. So I don't foresee it as giving me too much trouble OR cost all that much to fix. Fucks sake, the black hole of money that is biking just got a little bigger for me.

I always look at bikes and wonder if I can jump them, anyone else have that problem?

Honestly I would leave it kind of as is (maybe paint or something) but use it for a commuter setup to get around.

And get knobbies for some singletrack action (super fun).

That's me. smile

Sounds like the BB is toast.

Anyone know if a decent website like albes or danscomp to order parts for this thing...

It's a single speed frame, wheelset is actually fine, forks are good.

But i need everything else.

Chainreaction is horribly laidout, confusing, and seems expensive at a glance.

Oh there's plenty of them around. They're usually pretty steep on price and have a tendacy to order cheap parts and not really tell you what your paying for when you need a new BB and headset. Cranks stems and bars are different.

Finding a decent shop for parts is tough here, if you don't want to use thier mechanics alot of places don't want to bother with you for a $20 part.

Both are decent for parts. Best thing though is to go to the local shop if you are not sure about parts, and ask. Bring the bike, and ask what to get.

Any shop that won't help the customer for a 20 dollar part is a terrible shop. Period. 20 dollars for a part is not a lot (by the way most mtb bbs are around 30+ as they come with a spindle, however if you keep it single speed you could look into a bmx crankset/sprocket and get a euro bmx bb) and a shop would be STUPID not to help as that could easily generate repeat business. ALWAYS help the little guy when you are locally owned. If you alienate customers, you lose business which could become the difference between open and closed.

Same with a shop that doesn't tell you what you are getting. That's ridiculous. Granted MTB has many options for spindle length and BB shell width, so accuracy is key, but they should be telling you.

You COULD just measure the BB shell in MM, and then the spindle length in MM, and hit up AMAZON for the correct sizes. Also define if your cranks are square taper or octalink or if they have a different spindle/crank interface (kinda like 8 spline vs 48 spline vs the square spindle-powerbites).

So I ID'd the bike. Not bad for free. This will help when I start to buy parts and assemble it. Now that I know what it is. It will be less of a crap shoot when buy junk for it.

It's too new haha!

He would need an old Schwinn or Raleigh from the 70's/80's for that.

Um. Whats going on with the grips in your picture?

|

7/2/2015 8:33 AM

Hey, seeing that this bike will cruise more than go to a skatepark (obvious),

why don't you cut off the brake stays/thingamajig on the top of the chain stays?

make it a chainstay-only bike, beef it up with some gussets and some welding, and voila, a head turner!

|

It doesn't matter where a train goes. It's decidin' to get on that does.

I wondered the same thing... I have no idea why it was like that.

Whats a brakestay, I'm not sure what part of the bike your talking about? I'd never beef up a frame by welding it, that would just fuck it up.

Seeing the state of the bike, i don't think that it really has been heat treated...

I say keep the chainstay, and get rid of the seat stays (sorry that word had been at the tip of my tongue and didn't want to come out).

You mean seeing the crappy paintjob on the $1000 bike that someone who probably stole it did to it a long time ago. Yeah it's a heat treated chromoly bianchi frame. If I cut off the seat stay then the frame is no longer a double diamond design (which gives bike frame their strength)

Regardless of heat treatment, WELDING WEAKENS METAL. And cutting the seatstay would destroy it.

No, i'm not going to screw up a perfectly good frame.

Good.

Kids are stupid on here.

Why would you hack up a perfectly good setup? I'd bet if I posted my CX/Freeroad bike kids would tell me to do stupid crap to it too.
