Anyone else make their own t-shirts?

I've been making these

Photo

And selling them to other bikers cheap because the scooter population here is too goddamn high.

Also made these

Got some over spray on this one, but I removed that after I took the photo

But I don't sell those obviously because that wouldn't be right to do since it's Animal's logo, not mine. Just made them for myself to wear.

They're pretty legit in my opinion, I made the stencils for them out of cardboard, place a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to prevent bleeding through, lay the stencil on the shirt, cover the rest of the shirt up to prevent over spray, then use bricks hold everything in place & take the wrinkles out of the shirt for a better result.

I just use regular spray paint, 2 coats 10 minutes apart, then let dry, then heat-set it with an iron, and finally I take a razor to any over spray and it scrapes right off. They last pretty well too in the wash. Mine's been washed multiple times so far, and doesn't seem to have faded at all. Obviously after a ton of washing, it'll start to.. But that's normal with most any shirt with a design on it.

Just thought I'd share this with you guys and explain my technique in case anyone wants to try it out for themselves. It works great in a pinch, and my friends love the "anti-scoot" ones.. The scooter kids here though, don't lolol.

But yeah, if anyone else dabbles with this sort of thing then feel free to post it up!

I used to make my own shirts too. Smart of you not to sell the logo ones, it's a good way to get sued. I can tell you tho that cutting the logos/pics/etc out of masking/painting tape first then placing them on the shirt makes the edges of the pic alot cleaner! Like zero overspray unless there's a crease in the tape. But you'll have to let it dry for like 12 hours before you pull it off or it'll mess them up. Maybe that was just mine tho since I'd lay down like 5 layers at least, that way it was thick like a real screen print. Worked out great tho!

Yeah the a got fucked up when cutting it out, so I had to make a different one and it got all fucked up. I filled in the gaps with sharpie though which actually works nicely and hasn't faded on me yet either

For sure, I figure it's no big deal since people make shit like that for graphic design classes in school all the time. Plus I'm not selling/making any money off of them, so no copyright intended. Just made them for the hell of it pretty much haha.

But that sounds like a good idea though, I'll have to try that because I was thinking of making smaller stencils but the smaller the logo, the harder it is to cut out on the cardboard.

You can also do darker colored shirts and LIGHTLY mist bleach water 50/50 mix onto the shirt, then the stenciled logo with change color.

Try cereal box cardboard. Not the thicker corrugated stuff.

I tried that, and an old school folder.. cut out great! only problem was it didn't carry enough weight to weigh itself down enough on the shirt, so a lot of over spray got underneath it. I suppose I could put little rocks on it to hold it down

I made an animal stencil. It's nowhere as intricate as yours but i figure it would work to spray on my box and quarter any maybe a t-shirt. Photo

I'll give you a tip, it's a bit harder, but what I do is find the image I want, save it, then you can either print it out or save time and just make it full screen on your computer, use masking tape to hold a piece of computer paper against your screen, then trace the image out. Works better if you turn the brightness up a lot so you can see it better. I like to shade in the areas that will be cut out so it's easier to see which parts to cut out.

then you just tape it flat to cardboard, and cut it out carefully

haha that's awesome ^^

do you just get some special paper, print the design on it, then iron it right on or how's that work?

INSTRUCTIONS SNAGGED OFF IMGUR, I DID NOT COME UP WITH THESE.

"This is how I transfer an image onto the freezer paper. I pull up an image on my second monitor, size it accordingly, lay the monitor on its back, place the freezer paper WAX SIDE DOWN, tape down the edges, and start using a pencil to trace the image.

I like this method because 1, I don't have a printer, and 2, the monitor is natural back light for me to trace on.

**I realize this isn't the safest thing for a monitor. This an old monitor that I don't care if I accidentally burn a pixel. When tracing, do not press hard on the screen!**

Now the fun part. Lay your paper onto a surface that you can cut onto. I suggest a plastic cutting board, but I just use a plastic cover from an old Planner.

This stencil is going to positive, meaning that the areas I cut out will be the areas that will be bleached. So, I cut inside the lines, instead of outside them.

Cutting is all done here. Clean up your corners using your x-acto knife. Make sure your lines are straight, and the stencil is exactly how you want it. The more time and effort you put into this, the more rewarding your final product will be!

Here you can see the shirt underneath the stencil.

Place cardboard inside the shirt so bleach doesn't bleed through to the other side.

Using your iron (medium - high), iron on the stencil in the exact place you want. The wax on the back of the paper will stick to the shirt, creating crisp lines. I added more paper around it to ward off off-spray.

Now you are ready for bleach. Put on gloves! I used a 75/25 blend of bleach to water for this shirt.

I wanted this design to get really light, so I used a higher concentration of bleach:water. Most of the time a mix of 50/50 bleach:water will work just fine!

Spray an area and then IMMEDIATELY blot the bleach area with a paper towel.

**Pro-tip - less is more. If you spray to much bleach, the fibers in the shirt will start to wick the bleach past your stencil lines, resulting in a blotched mess.**

This is after 3 coats of bleaching/blotting. I also like to have a desk lamp over my project to help it dry even more. I spent about 30 minutes bleaching/drying(don't let the bleach soak into the fibers!) this in total.

I also like to hit the stencil with the iron again periodically. Do this very carefully! It helps dry up potential blotching and reseals your lines. Don't over do it though, you could burn the paper.

After you are happy with the amount of discoloring, dry the stencil and surrounding areas so you don't accidentally spill drops on unintentional areas.

CAREFULLY lift the stencil. The paper will lift from the shirt much like a sticker on a new t-shirt.

It's possible you could salvage your stencil after you lift it, but I wouldn't count on it."
